Virus made pictures invisible but still there

Specs: Windows 7
I did not discover the name of the virus before it got removed, but all I know is this: the virus deleted all my files, along with the file folders they were in. However, in "recent places" the file folders appear, but nothing is in them. This leads me to believe my files still exist, but are just invisible. Is this true? Can I still retrieve them? Some of them were mildly important...

Your "Recent" folder is only a history of sorts. If the files aren't in their original location, clicking on the shortcut will not open anything.

What virus did you have? Normally, viruii do not delete files, but will corrupt the OS. Were you running any anti-virus at all? Most pre-loaded computers come with some sort of anti-virus program.

Perhaps if you explain exactly what's going on, we can help you.

As I said, I never found out the name of the virus, I just wanted it gone. The laptop it infected had no virus software (I was under the impression it did when I bought it), so that's why the virus got in. So I downlaoded avast! free antivirus and it got rid of whatever it was. However, this was about 2 months ago and I assumed all was lost. But when I recently found the folders, I thought there might still be hope. I wish I could give more details as I'm aware this is very vague, but given when the problem occurred, and that the program I ran got rid of the problem, I can only tell you what I know. I tried a system restore, but that did not work. Are there no vague solutions I can try, maybe something for a similar problem? At this point I'll try anything.
