i have 2 machines, both dells, with 2 different nic's, that both seem to be damaged by a virus somehow.

after cleaning an AIM rootkit with AIMFIX, and then running Cleanup4.0 and hijack this, both pc's now refuse to link with my switch. i dont even get a link light. is anyone aware of a virus/rootkit that can damage the hardware of a nic like this? i have even booted off of a bartpe cdrom and the nic doesn't respond in taht environment either. very strange. is there possibly some vestige of the virus in the firmware on the nic, something that i can remove? and if so, how?

Have you tried to release and renew your address by using cmd then ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew commands using start and then run? Have you checked the hardware status in the device manager to see if the drivers cards are working? Perhaps you need to reload their drivers. Have you used the reset button or disconnected the power from your switch to reset it? Also use reset or disconnect the power from your ISP's modem?

More likely the virus corrupted the NIC's drivers. Uninstall these and reinstall from a fresh set d/led from the manufacturer's website - the INF files could have been corrupted, too, and that means you'll have to go to a secure source. Also, if the virus isn't completely shut down it can re-infect your system and do it all over again.
