Ok, not sure anyone else has already written about this because stinger.exe is also McAfee's name for virus cleaner. I got a virus that installs over 120+ files into the same directory that are all the same size (73kb), then when any of these bogus keygens or .scr's are run a file named "stinger.exe" (in the task manager) hogs up the majority of the memory usage. The bogus starter file runs as well and several instances of the stinger.exe are permitted. I went searching for the file and found C:\windows\system32\stinger.exe. I downloaded the authentic stinger and replaced the file, since it replaced itself when I originally tried deleting it. The corrupt stinger still exists and appears in the task manager simultaneously with the genuine one. The actual stinger doesn't find the bogus stinger, nor does Spybot S&D, nor SpyBlaster. I am unable to reinstall Norton AntiVirus. Anybody successfully get rid of this thing once and for all?

So i take it you don't mcafee installed on your computer or do you??

Has been known that if you have more than one anti-virus software on your computer to mess things up can i surgest that if you have Norton and Macfee on your computer to uninstall one of them and then of course rerun you scan with updated definitions off the internet.

I use to use Norton and i have found a new bit of software which is SSSOOOoooooo much better than any virus software i have ever used and its called Panda internet security.

Here is a link to the online scan facility which might help: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

But if you take any recommendations and you have a bit of money floating around i would invest in the retail version and get that on your computer quick.

Good Luck

"I downloaded the authentic stinger and replaced the file".....
What?

You don't install the genuine Stinger, you just open the file and it searches your PC for one of around 45 known viruses. There are 60,000+ viruses and although Stinger is worth a try, you might find you have a virus that Stinger can't find.

Start your PC in safe mode, search for stinger.exe and delete any you find. Get a friend to download the genuine Stinger to a floppy disk and run that on your PC while it's still in safe mode. If you have any other anti-virus programs on your PC, run them after Stinger and see if anything gets better.

If it doesn't, well I guess if you play with fire (keygen?) you run the risk of getting burned!
