Virus in MBR?

Specs: Windows XP

First of all thanks in advance for any help.

I'm trying desperately to help a friend remove what appears to be MBR virus.

The virus affects the display, and upon bootup has red smiley faces dotted all over it, once it loads windows XP, the screen has black and white lines over it so much it is totally unusable.

I have formatted the laptop and they are still there on format, and afterwards they appear within a few minutes.

Am I right the only way to solve this may be to format the MBR? I dont have any problems formatting the MBR other than the virus renders the screen almost unasable so you cannot see what the computer is asking.

I have also tried connecting the laptop to another monitor to see if ti was dead pixels, and it does exactly the same thing.

My other issue with trying to format the MBR is I have no floppy drive on the laptop, and no external that I can plug in, is it possible to write the files to CD, and boot from that?
Any ideas?

Cheers Guys!
