So I'm attempting to fix a virus for a friend. I converted to Mac a few years ago so I'm rusty with Windows. Hopefully someone on here can help me out! :) She told me Firefox was acting funny. When she was using Google or Yahoo and was searching for something, she would click on a link but it wouldn't take her to the link that she clicked on. Instead it would take her to some random link. Then Firefox would randomly shut down and she would get a pop-up saying: ATTENTION! If your computer is struck by the virus, you could suffer data loss, erratic PC behaviour, PC freezes and creahes. Detect and remove viruses before they damage your computer! Antivirus 2009 will perform a 100% FREE and quick scan of your computer for Viruses, Spyware and Adware. Do you want to install Antivirus 2009 to scan your computer for malware now? (Recommended) Her antivirus programs stopped working. She was using AVG and when you opened it, it just said "There are no active components." I couldn't get a scan or anything. I downloaded Avast and that ran for about 3 hours. The results just showed that there was a sign of MW97: Thus Family. I hit repair and hope it would be fixed. Nope. Firefox is still acting funny. She can't get any Windows updates. When you go to the Windows update pages, it just says the page cannot be displayed. I got the full version of Kaspersky and that ran for about 7 hours. In the end it detected 5 infections. One was a trojan called "trojan-downlader.wma.wimad." Again I hit repair and hoped it would be fixed. It seems to kind of be fixed. Now I can use the Firefox and it works. It stopped randomly shutting down and I no longer get the "Attention" pop-up. I tried searching for a few random things and its opening up the correct links. However when I search for any kind of antivirus website, it takes me to a website that looks A LOT like the real website but it's a fake with fake software. Probably more viruses/trojans/WHATEVER. I've tried booting in Safe Mode. It shows the drivers loading and then it stalls at mup.sys. Then I get a quick blue screen and then a black screen that says it was not able to boot. I downloaded a few registry cleaners (CCleaner, Advanced WindowsCare Personal, etc.) and tried those. Now it will stall at TDI.sys. So it's still not booting through safe mode. I also installed the full version of AVG. On AVG and Kaspersky, I can't update the databases. It just says connection failed. I'm running MalwareByte's Anti-Malware right now. I uninstalled Java because she had some olddd version on there and downloaded the newest version of Java. I uninstalled Limewire (where she got one of the trojans, tsk, tsk). I've ran Disk Clean-up and Disk Defragmenter. I've noticed the firefall gets turned off somehow. I go back in and turn it on but it just gets disabled again. But I just don't know where to go from here or how to fix this. How can I update the antivirus databases and get those to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

I dislike to be the bearer of bad news but I must tell you that by clicking on a link your friend unknowly allowed a rogue antispyware program to infect the machine with what M$ described as "scareware." M$ and the State of Washington has just filed lawsuit against the scareware purveyors under the auspices of the state's Computer Spyware Act. We will give it a try XpUser. If you cannot download malwarebytes use an uninfected computer and download malwarebytes to cd the run it on the infected computer. Do not check the "update" and "run on startup' boxes when running from the cd just click the desktop icon. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these sites: MalwareBytes1 MalwareBytes2 1. Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. 2. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. 3. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. 4. Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. 5. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. 6. Make sure that everything found is checked, and click Remove Selected. 7. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately. 8. The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. 9. Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply. Looks like you are running two antivirus programs, AVG and Kaspersky. You need to uninstall one of them as they will conflict and cause you problems. Please download ComboFix to the desktop from one of the following links: Link1 Link 2 Link 3 Combofix is a powerful tool so follow the instructions exactly or you could damage your computer. Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with Combofix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results". Click on This Link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask. In your case to run Combofix do the following: 1. Go offline turn off your AVG and/or Kaspersky antivirus, and any antispyware that you may have. 2. Run Combofix and save its log. 3. Restart the computer to get the antivirus running again but leave the antispyware programs off until we get the computer cleaned. 4. Post the Combofix log. Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet. Double-click combofix.exe Follow the prompts. Go to start> run> type in notepad</B. then press enter> format> click to uncheck "word wrap". Exit notepad. Download SDFix.exe and save it to your Desktop. Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
