Virus cause Sony laptop to keep restarting

Sony Vaio vpccw13fx/b notebook

Specs: Windows XP
Here's the issue, my friend downloaded a virus to his laptop and it keeps restarting itself. I know it's now the power source because the screen allows me to get to the safemode selection, but, when I select safe mode(and all other modes i.e. safe with networking, etc.) it begins to load then restarts itself abruptly. I know that normally you would start the computer in either mode and try to system restore to start anew, but the system doesn't allow me to get to any mode. Does anybody have a clue how to gain access to at least one of the modes?

What happens when you choose the 'disable automatic restart
on system failure' from the safe mode menu? It should give you
the BSOD with a bit of a pointer as to where the problem lies.

My Sony Vaio has crashed, got as far as being able to disable auto start and the message read in brief 'problem detected, windows shut down to prevent damage and goes on to say disable/uninstall anti virus, disk defrag etc.,' (obviously cant do that as unable to access). Mentions CHKDSK/F and then

stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82F66F0, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

Any help would be so appreciated!!!!
