For several days browsing on my computer has been very slow - it either takes 10 or more seconds to open a page or I get the message that it cannot display any page at all. I then have to reboot the modem to get it going again, and even that doesn't always work.
I had some problems about 6 months ago which got fixed with the help of this forum. Ever since I only have the Windows Firewall and I didn't re-install my Norten Anti-Virus Software as it was part of the problem at the time. Just check now and then with Spybot S&D.
A firewall test revealed that it was quite easy to penetrate it so I am worried that something fishy might be going on.
Many thanks in advance for any thoughts or ideas.

While there's no "perfect" solution (and you didn't mention what type of connection from what I could tell), I'd strongly recommend adding something for virus-scanning, since Spybot only checks for spyware, not virii. The WinXP firewall is quite basic, and somewhat more easily compromised than say ZoneAlarm or Comodo. At least grab a free version of firewall and AV software...

Thanks for the reply - the connection is ADSL 512. Is there any anti-virus freeware you would recommend?
Would it make sense to run HijackThis and post the log? Last time I visited here some items were removed and the computer was running like a dream.

Cheers

Dropping out is bad :(

Medion MIM 2080
Toshiba T2130CT
Macintosh Performa 450

All working wonderfully.

While I run the "paid" versions of Avast! Pro and ZoneAlarm, I'd probably recommend the free versions of AVG 7.5 and Comodo. Both are easy to configure and frequently update (in some cases, too frequently). With any broadband connection, you especially need something AV wise (and even with dial-up, bad things happen---just not quite as quickly....)

I installed the AVG 8.0 free and ran the scan - it found a couple of trojans and a heap of cookies. The slow opening of pages is still going on. Could a hijackthis log be helpful?
