Comment:

I just downloaded a virus from MSN (yes that was stupid)... It was a .zip file that contained a .scr file which I executed... It did several things to my system:

1. It disabled Task Manager (which I recovered)
2. It disabled the Shut Down and Restart options from the Start menu
3. It disabled my antivirus software (AVG Free)
4. It blocked access to regedit.exe - first by disabling access through gpedit.msc
5. Once I recovered access to regedit and I try to run it, it runs for about 1-2 seconds and then closes.
6. I installed Search & Destroy and HJT but the same thing happens - I see the opening screen and then the application closes.
7. Ad-Aware runs but doesn't find anything
8. I ran online scans and none of them found anything
9. The virus has tried to propagate itself to everyone on my MSN Messenger contact list

I would be extremely grateful to anyone that can help me get rid of this. If you need any further info please let me know.

Thanks!

Some questions first ...

1. Where did you download it from?
2. What is the name of the zip file?

1. I downloaded it from an infected contact on MSN Messenger. I thought he was sending me something.
2. I don't have the exact name of the .zip file right now but I am running MSN Messenger right now and have warned all my contacts about the virus. If it tries to propagate again I'll get one of them to give me the name of the .zip and will post it here asap. The .scr file name was something like "facebook.scr" or similar.

One more thing I forgot to mention, I can't even restart in safe mode. When I try to do that I get the blue screen saying to check for viruses, harddrive problems etc...

Bro have you tried system restore? if not successful, disable system restore. Run malwarebytes,dial-a fix and then try re-installing avg or any antivirus, then scan.

Or try to create a new user account see if you can run your AVG or spybot. Because I think your current_user in registry is infected.Before doing that try to find the bug in services and uninstall it and edit system.ini before logoff or restart. Below is the default for system.ini.
"for 16-bit app support

[drivers]
wave=mmdrv.dll
timer=timer.drv

[mci]
[driver32]
[386enh]
woafont=dosapp.FON
EGA80WOA.FON=EGA80WOA.FON
EGA40WOA.FON=EGA40WOA.FON
CGA80WOA.FON=CGA80WOA.FON
CGA40WOA.FON=CGA40WOA.FON
".....

I know its difficult to understand. 1st of all I don't speak good english. 2nd it's really very difficult to fix.

But if I am you, backup your files and reformat your system. It will take you less time and effort. Then rescan your PC using different antivirus before running and installing any applications(.exe,.scr ,etc) from your backup.

Thanks marshallzkie. Your English is fine, but there is just on thing I don't understand:
"Try to find the bug in services and uninstall it"

I have tried system restore, but it was disabled by group policy, so I will try the new user method you suggest... If it doesn't work I will have to format, but I would really like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks for your help.

What I meant was windows services in computer management. Try to look for anything suspicious.

1 more thing if you have 2 PC remove the infected hhd and put it to another PC. Scan it with different antivirus apps.

Be careful not to put the infected hdd as primary boot device.

OK, I re-enabled System Restore, and restored to a point before the infection... Now regedit works. Is there anything more I should do?

Hm... AVG still doesn't work. I'll try to re-install it now and see if it works then. I will keep this thread updated in case anyone else is experiencing the same infection.

Thanks again marshallzkie. I already re-installed AVG and it works. I am running the scan as we speak (in normal mode though). I will try to run it again in Safe mode if I can. If not I'll try the .reg code you posted.

The scan has already found the infection, although it is still running:
Trojan Horse Dropper.Generic.AAOD (according to AVG). It seems to match up very well because the source file for that is Newimage15.zip which is what I downloaded. Take a look here if interested:

Youre welcome elrico. Nice to hear youre doing ok. Guess system restore works.. Try scanning with morethan 1 antivirus and antispyware to make sure. Goodluck!

I restarted in Safe mode with no problems and ran the scan - found no infections. It looks as though I'm in the clear but will run some more scans just to make sure.

Lesson learned :) Cheers.
