Hi I just bought an USB external hard disk drive (HDD) and when I 'plugged and played' my virus checker came up immediately with VBS/ redlof-A virus in E:\folder.htt. E was assigned to my new external HDD. The device was originally packed and sealed and appeared completely unused. It has two hidden files on it desktop.ini and folder.htt. Does that mean it is not so brand new and someone had it installed and infected and then returned??? What should I do? Can I erase the files and forget about it. My virus protection had blocked access to it so I don't think I have been infected. I have not tried to delete it in case I have to return it and proof my point. Obviously the easy option for me would be to get rid of it but if I have to return it to the shop I will certainly do it. Your help and advice would be appreciated.

I personally would take the drive straight back to the shop and get on my "high horse" with them. Every brand new hard drive I have purchased over the years has been completely empty and certainly not containing a virus. Very suspicious..
That having been said, I am fairly confident that reformatting the drive would solve your dilema.
