A friend is getting a great deat of unwanted mail. Could range from 500 or more a day. It is all undeliverable mail or It might say you need to be approved by person getting mail. Last I spoke to server all they said was they were working on It. They are saying someone has her address they have an virus that is causing this mass mailings. I have put message rules in outlook explorer 6 many still get through. Now not really knowing what I am doing but I try. She does not want to change address because she has had It for years. Is there anything else that can be done on my end? Is there and just how would I do It to put I only want to get mail from people In my address book? Just looking for some ideals. Thank you all.

In Outlook express, highlight the unwanted mail, click on message in the menu and select Block Sender, you may have to do this for each new address, but it will reduce them.

I have already blocked 1000's. They are not put in my inbox, but still get 1000's all different address.

Download and install Mailwasher. http://www.mailwasher.net/download.php
Mailwasher gives you the ability to see your mails on the server and delete, bounce or blacklist them before they even come on your computer.
Bounce the unwanted e-mails so the sender thinks your adres is no longer valid and are automaticly put in the blacklist.
I always open Mailwasher and if i don't know the sender the mail is bounced or deleted.
Sometimes Mailswasher tells me that there's a possible virus in a mail.

Blocking sender rarely works because they use spoof email addresses and keep changing them. For the same reason bouncing is pointless these days.

I found Mailwasher as fiddling as OE Rules, except that with the latter (if you stick with it for ages) you do "eventually" achieve fair results. I then dumped MailWasher.

If you are only interested in specific emailers then you have got it made! Just make your very first OE rule "accept" them. You do this by listing their email addresses then setting it to "stop processing more rules".

If you wish you can add some keyword, such as goodmail, so that you can temporarily let new mailers through. It has to be something that doesn't make up a real word.

If you still need other rules then they come after this first rule. Don't forget you can delete at server too, but be very careful to ensure that any rule using this is sound. Note, for example, if you veto "cialis" you will also reject "speCIALISt".

It's a black art but putting their attempts to fool you "in your own rules" can be a useful ruse.

Thank you all for your replies. I kind of think this might be a lost cause. Have noticed out of 50 e-mails she gets 5-10 have been blocked. The rest all new address. One ___@dork.com, stupid stuff. I did get Mailwasher Pro Am able to see the junk before hand delete or bounce it. But what use is It to bounce If the always come up with new ones. All server says Is use message rules and sooner or later It will stop. As of now have gotten over 800 today all trash.Thank you for your help.

Yes, this is exactly the point I was making in the first line of my #4.

I think you said earlier that you only want to receive email from specific addresses.

"IF" this is the case then make the first OE message rule accept the required ones (as given in my #4).

This will stop them dead if you delete the rest at the server. The way to do this is make the second rule look for some keyword ( or group of numbers) of your own choice.

If you want to sift through the remaining spam then put whatever rules you require after your "accept" rule (instead of the second rule I suggested).

In effect I'm agreeing with your server. The only other way is to download one of the many Baysarian (spelling?) filters which have learning capabilities. Not sure if there is a freebie around - probably.

... when I said "sift through the remaining spam" this is to ensure that genuine messages don't get binned or deleted. This matters if you still want to accept valid emails from unknown sources.

The other way is to change your email address and never leave it on a website or take other risks with it. You can always have a special email address for more risky situations.
