Hi folks,
I've got an unknown process showing up in task manager on a win2k machine:
2005829163550_m
That's the full image name - no .exe. It can be terminated, but reappears following a restart. I suspect a virus or malware, but haven't found anything similar doing some searches. Any ideas?
TIA R

first close that process and then open msconfig(start-run and type msconfig). go to start up tab and check if there's anything similar to that process. and if is, then uncheck it. that stops process from starting at windows start up.
also recommened to scan Ad-aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Download process explorer at www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html and open it while your unknown process is running. Process explorer can tell you all sorts of helpful information about your running processes, including what programs are running it, etc.

Yes you have some malicious program on your computer. Do a spyware/virus scan while booted in Safe Mode with no network.
Free for you:
Lavasoft's Adaware and/or Spybot Search and Destroy
Rule #1: Good Computers don't go down.
Rule #2: There is no such thing as a good computer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was going to use Spybot S&D as soon as we got McAffee installed... which is now posing problems because of missing dlls. Since we can't connect to the net right now, we can't install SS&D and we can't get info on strange processes directly from the machine.
Does anyone have specific info on spyware/malware which creates a process named after the time: name changed to a new process yesterday: 2005831142726_m, shortly before 14:30 local time!
Tx R
