I've got a Dell Dimension 3000. A few days ago, my computer started acting up- booting up with keyboard & mouse inactive, freezing mid-boot, taking a much-longer-than-usual amount of time to load the desktop or various programs & websites. Often, it will load to the screen where XP allows me to select which user desktop I want to log onto, but it freezes there and won’t let me continue. I have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0. I realize now that this isn't the most current version of McAfee's software, but I keep the virus file updated- I don't see why it shouldn't be helping in this situation.
I've done multiple scans but nothing is detected. My wife says she recently was bombarded by a cascade of pop-ups, and the VirusScan indicated the presence of a trojan virus of some sort but didn't seem able to isolate it. Now it finds nothing.
I loaded a free version of Spyware Doctor, and that scan appears to have detected a "MediaMotor" virus located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\objsafe.tlb. This virus apparently creates files throughout the computer, but when I followed the manual removal directions (the free version wouldn't remove the virus for me), I wasn't able to locate any of the files that are supposed to have been created by this thing. I also ran a DOS scan, but nothing was detected.
I don't really know if the MediaMotor threat is legit. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if a free version of antivirus software "found" a horrible virus that really wasn't there, in order to scare me into purchasing the full version. But something is definitely "hinky" (haven't heard that one in a while) with my computer, and I'm afraid to log into some of my more sensitive accounts or pay any bills online.
This morning, my free Avast! antivirus software quarantined something called "DAME (Dark Angel M.E.)". Is that related or just coincidence?
Is there a way to check and know for sure if there's a problem- without doing something drastic like reformating the drive or spending $50 bucks on software I will barely understand how to use? I'll spend money if I have to, but I'd sure rather not. I also have a free cleaning program called CleanCache that I use often to clean cookies and history and sht.
I'm not very tech-y, but I'm not a moron.
Any help would be much appreciated- thanks.

We can try to find it. Please post a Hijack This log, download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.
Next please download SilentRunners from this link Please download SilentRunners from here: http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip. Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile in a reply to this post.. Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Looks as though you are running two antivirus programs, not a good idea as they can conflict. You should decide which one you want and uninstall the other.
You should also install the newest 1.5 version of java.
Go to start>control panel>add/remove programs scroll dow to and uninstall these items if found:
FunWebProducts
Run Hijack This, close all windows and browsers except Hijack This. place a check to the left of these items and press "fix checked":

Posting Kaspersky Log. It found a few items that apparently I can select but I'm guessing I cannot delete or quarantine through the free online scan. I've left the final report open in case I need to do anything else there. Thanks.

Also, I uninstalled the secondary Avast! antivirus program and I did not locate a program called FunWebProducts. When I looked for a current version of Java to download, I only found "Java Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7". Since you mentioned the newest version as 1.5, I thought I might have been looking at the wrong program so I have not updated that.

Go to start>control panel>Java>delete files>check all three boxes>ok.
Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/ We will need it later in safe modeDownload Ewido Security Suite We will need this later in safe mode
Be sure to update Ewido
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Run Ewido from safe mode and let it delete all that it finds.
RunATF-Cleaner from safe mode. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button. While still in safe mode navigate to and delete the following file if found:
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll

I'm working on the rest, but in my control panel, there is only a "Java Plug-In" icon. When I open that, there is a gray Java Plug-In Control Panel with a bunch of tabs (Basic, Advanced, Browser, Proxies, Cache, Certificates, Update, About). I don't see any files to check and/or delete.

Since the virus files Kaspersky found seemed to be Java-related, I'm going to hold off on the procedures in safe mode until I get further direction regarding those 3 files I'm supposed to delete. ATF and Ewido are ready to go.
I very sincerely appreciate your assistance with this, kind stranger.

Go ahead and do the the suggestions in response #7 with the exception of the java ones of course.
After you have finished post a new Hijack This log.
next download the newest 1.5 version of java from this link (says version 5.0 update 7) http://java.com/en/
Once downloaded go to start>control panel>add/remove programs and uninstall your old 1.4 version. That should get the baddie in java.
Post a new Kaspersky scan log.

This is the new HJT log. I ran into a small problem. You probably are familiar with the way XP handles user accounts. When you log on, you select which account you want and it takes you to that customized desktop. When starting in safe mode, the "Administrator" account, which is usually invisible, becomes visible and you can log into that. My wife and I also both have separate accounts (we just set it up that way originally)- both with administrator access, but we really only use my account for the both of us. All the real activity goes on under my login, and any virus probably was contracted through that account, though I assume it would infect the whole computer. Anyway, when starting in safe mode, my account didn't come up as an option. The administrator account did, and so did my wife's, which had the ewido program that I'd originally set up on my desktop. The ATF Cleaner was not there. I tried to find a way to access my desktop in safe mode, and I cannot understand why, but it was like it simply didn't exist in safe mode. So I started back up, logged onto my wife's account, downloaded ATF CLeaner to her desktop, re-entered safe mode, and ran the two programs from her account. I hope that's okay and that it would have scanned my account also. Unless you're familiar with this problem, my only other option I think would be to run the programs from my account but not in safe mode. This probably means nothing, but I'm explaining it in detail just in case it's relevant to a virus. So here's the HJT log. I'll download Java and run Kaspersky next. Thanks:

No malware has been detected. The sections that have been scanned are CLEAN.Now, just as an aside, if I can feel confident that I'm virus-free, but I still feel my computer is acting sluggish, can you make any recommendations to speed things up?
Again, thank you for all your help.

I think I can see three antivirus programs on the computer, two are running and one not completely uninstalled. This can cause conflicts that can cause slowdowns. If norton's is not in use go to there site and run the uninstaller for your version. You should choose between McAfee and Avast antivirus then uninstall the other.
If it were me I would choose either Ewido or Windows Defender and run one or the other of those also.
You can remove these items with HT as they're not needed at startup ans some are resourse hogs.
