It has been 8 days since my latest reply to this forum under the heading "Brontok Virus"... Apparently, folks are stumped on how to defeat the Brontok virus that has infected my computer! If you want to suggest something or see what has already been tried, please look at the "Brontok Virus" thread on this forum.

Thanks! (And please don't leave me hanging!)

kattrin,
thanks for your reply. In response...

1. CompactbyteAV

I tried downloading it from www.compactbyte.com, but my antivirus reports that it is "suspicious", possibly being infected with "W32/Blocker-based!Maximus". So the download was blocked!

2. GData Anti...Worm

Downloaded it. Seemed to run OK, but didn't report anything. Now I'm waiting to see if the virus surfaces again. (So far one day without seeing it.)

3. Sophos BRONTGUI

Didn't work. Brontok was still active afterward.

4. Kaspersky Brontok Removal Tool

Haven't yet tried. May try this if GData Anti...Worm turns out not to work.

5. BitDefender Brontok Removal Tool

Didn't work. Brontok was still active afterward.

6. Brontok Washer(Most Effective against Brontok Virus)

Didn't work. Brontok was still active afterward.

7. OgAV

Haven't yet tried. May try this if GData Anti...Worm turns out not to work.

Jennifer SUMN,
yes, I did Google my virus - way back in October when I initially was hit with it. I found nothing about my particular variety of Brontok, and reading descriptions of other varieties, I realized what I had was behaving a bit differently. That's when I made my first post to this forum (in fact it was through that Google search that I found out about this forum). Now it seems there is more out there to be Googled, so I may try AdwareAlert if GData Anti...Worm didn't do it.

thanks

kattrin,
for completeness, let me update what I wrote earlier:

4. Kaspersky Brontok Removal Tool

Downloaded it. Seemed to run OK, but didn't report anything needing to be cleaned, even though Brontok was active while Kaspersky was running. Didn't even detect the files previously quarantined by my AV software. (I didn't expect it to, since the variety of Brontok which is affecting me was not on Kaspersky's list of viruses to be cleaned.)

7. OgAV

Downloaded it. Seemed to run OK, but only reported the files previously quarantined by my AV software as needing to be cleaned. In other words, didn't work.

JenniferSUMN,
I downloaded AdwareAlert and ran it. It seemed to run OK, and found lots of things it wanted to fix, but didn't say anything about a Brontok virus. I found it rather obnoxious that it wouldn't clean anything until I registered online (and it didn't say whether registering was free or not). At any rate, Brontok is still affecting my system...
