Subject: Unable to use IE
OS: WinXP home edition
CPU/Ram: Unsure
Model/Manufacturer: Compaq
Comment:
I am trying to work on my boyfriends computer that seems to be filled with viruses. He is unable to use internet explorer at all. If you double click on the icon on his desk top, it tries to open the page. All I get is a blank screen and at the bottom it is constantly trying to open a specific ip address that I have yet to clearly see what it is since it blips by so fast.

I have run (updated)spybot, spysweeper, CWshredder and a host of other antivirus/antispyware applications on it. Spybot keeps finding 7FaSST and 2020search. I keep removing the entries in the registry for these and they keep coming back. I cannot find any associated files on the hard drive unless they have been renamed or someting.

Please HELP!!!!!

Is reformat the HD & reinstall Windows a viable option for you?

M$ always tell us that when a machine is rampant (or infected) with numerous viruses & malwares, it is the only way to go.

I forgot to mention this. Previously it wouldnt let him download or install service pack 2 and when trying to view web pages it keep redirecting him to some Security center page asking you to buy their product.

I have installed Mozilla on his computer but I am having a hard time downloading critical Windows updates in mozilla since they require IE.

We have Avast! and ZoneAlarm running on all PCs in the network and his is the only one having the problem.

How old is this Compaq? You can order Recovery CD set from the Compaq-HP link below for no more than $25-$30 USD

KathyL, you may have to turn off system restore and then scan again with Spybot. Also make sure immunize is turned on.
Another free scan I use is http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php
remove all it finds.
Some other cleaners to use are
Ccleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4...
and ATF Cleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Clean...
Those 2 will clean out the excess junk and corrupted files.
Also google for regscrub and that will help to clean out your registry safely.
Let us know how you make out
Thanks

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

I ran all you said to run and it cleaned out a lot of stuff. However, IE is still having a problem. When I double click the icon, it tries to open the home page but at the bottom it shows the little download icon and there is a URL that flashes by really quick...all I could make out was www.livewinupdates.com/redir. Is this another virus/trojan?
