Folks, I have a weird problem here.
Creating a new document or spreadsheet works fine. When attempting to reopen a Word Document, the following error comes up: File ...is not available. When attempting to open an Excel file, the following comes up: The file cannot be opened because your virus scanner has detected a problem with the file.
Files will open in Wordpad, and I've copied them to a CD and scanned them...No virus found.
I've looked around and found MSKB article 835404, but the recommendations to update Symantec fail to fix the issue. I even enabled doc and xls as exclusions. Still the same problem. Uninstalled Symantec 10 and Live Update, and STILL the same problem.
All other software programs appear to be functioning fine. HELP!!!!!

i am sure ur using norton...if yes then uninstall norton and reinstall it... to do so go to www.tinyurl.com/6sppr ...download the removal tool.....also if ur able to open the norton internet security ...go to option and remove the check mark from enable office plug-ins tht should also resolve the issue...try it...if ur not using norton the the best option is to uninstall the office s/w and reinstall it...it won't result in data loss...good luck...bobby.

how to disable office plug-ins...open Norton .I.security...goto option go to misc...on the left hand side...now remove the check mark from office plug-ins...good luck....bobby.

jen - this reminds me of a time when my friend ran into similar. He configured NIS 2994 to scan all MS office files when opening. He lost his ability to open any documents once he unscribed from the annual subscription. Ultimately he reformat the HD and reinstalled Windows and MS Office and lo and behold everything is working fine. Whenever you uninstall Symantec stuffs, Symantec are reputed to never part company peacefully.

Thanks, XPU... I'll check with my user and see if she had a licensed version of Norton installed.

Is it possible that the user has an active Macro in the default files (eg. normal.dot) ro ine is automatically enabled when Excel is opened?
You may want to check Addins too.
Bryan

I did check with my user, and she said when they got the computer, it had a pre-installed trial version of Norton on it. That may very well be the problem, but thanks, Bryan. There are no macros listed. I'll check the Startup and Add-Ins as well.
