Solved unable to open any desktop icons

Specs: Windows 7, i3/2gb
my i3 window 7 desktop, my all desktop icons have changed into ward pad.and i am unable to open the icons.if i select open with option and select any option then all the desktop icons get changed into the selected option. please help.

Without any scans to help, As I understand your situation, you probably have a malware that had changed your old icons to word pads.

four things to do to see what damage has occured.

1st: dont click/open anything that is visable on the desktop, these are probably
corrupted files.
2nd: attempt to correct any registry errors that have changed the .exe association
3rd: download malwarebtyes( if you are able and run thier free scan.
4th: download unhide.exe

Go here:
Download the EXE fix file and run it according to the general instructions given there.

The initial cause of this could be a virus, so if the above fixes the problem then run your AV scans.
Also download and run MalwareBytes freebie as this can often find what AV's miss. Get it from here (green icon on top right of their page):

I now see this is similar to the process as already given (I didn't realise because of the long lines and small print)
