Unable to launch IE or update virus protection

July 2, 2015 at 16:42:59
Specs: Windows 7
I was unable to access the internet in any way because my laptop was infected with some type of malware. I had both AVG and malwarebytes installed, but could not make a connection to the internet to update virus definitions. I became so frustrated that I tossed the laptop into the closet and bought a new one. So fast forward 5 years and I pulled it out and again attempted to fix the issue. After many failures I found this blog and installed AdwCleaner. It worked!! After running it and allowing it to clean any and all infected folders (and there were quite a few) I was able to access the internet. Very helpful. Thanks so much.

Yes ADWCleaner is very good. However it does not guarantee that your computer is malware free - it could take several programs to ensure that.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Will do. Anything in particular that you would suggest?

These two complete the set of why I call "first aid" if you haven't tried them already:

Junkware Removal Tool (JRT)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
(blue Download button near top - not anything else on the page).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run JRT. It might appear to have stopped at times or flash the screen but sit tight until it has finished.

MalwareBytes:
http://filehippo.com/download_malwa...
(green Download button top right - not anything else on the page)
Install and Run the program but before doing its Scan go to "Settings > Detection and Protection" and put a checkmark in "Scan for rootkits". Quarantine anything it finds.

Please copy/paste the logs on here if they find anything. That will give us an idea if anything else is lurking and what it might be about.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
