I am trying to disable system restore so that I can run a virus scan to clean out two infected files. One is in c:\recycled\nprotect]00003882.cab and the other is in c:\windows\sysbckup\rbbad.cab. Norton says they are compressed win.ini files infected with the W32.Opaserve (win.ini) virus. I have been unable to repair or delete the file. I have found instructions on how to disable the system restore. Unfortunately, my troubleshooter options in file system does not have a box specifically addressing system restore. (Start, settings, control panel, system, performance, file system, troubleshooting) Perhaps with Windows 98SE, there is a different place or way to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Win 98 does not have a system restore.

Boot your PC to safe mode empty your recyling bin and run your virus scan from there. That way the files are not in use by the system.

Thanks for your input! Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful. I was successful in booting in safe mode, but my anti-virus software was still unable to delete or quarantine the virus/file. Is this because it is a compressed file? My anti-virus software is completely up-to-date, so I really don't know what to do. Any input on this???

=)
Thanks,
Lonny

go to where the files are and delete them ?? doesn't that work ??
get into safe mode empty the bin, then go here c:\windows\sysbckup\rbbad.cab and delete that cab, then scan and see if you have more infections
