I have Norton Systemworks & Internet Securities (2003), but I have been using XP Firewall exclusively because in the past Norton Firewall has interfered with my Internet connection. But recently I have learned that XP Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. I'm thinking I should be concerned. Should I give Norton another try? I haven't had any problems for several months; I scan with Norton Antivirus, Webroot SpySweeper and AdAwareSE daily, and occasionally run Spybot S&D. I keep my Internet Temp files and cookies cleaned out.

Any suggestions?

Well you dont have to do anything.Although XP's firewall is weak its better then nothing.A third party firewall can always do a better job, you want more security get a firewall

Yeah so that's kind of my question. Is XP's failure to monitor outgoing traffic its only weakness, or is there more? Is Norton a good firewall? Should I maybe consider runing both?

Do not run both firewalls. If you want the best security get a router(DLink, Linksys,SMC), all have hardware firewalls for a cost of round $30 after discounts are real bargains. For a test report of software firewalls go here

http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.htm

It should provide you with all the information you need. another place to check for firewall reviews is at http://www.pcflank.com/

XP's firewall does protect to a degree against OUTBOUND traffic. It just not do it very well but to state that it does not offer any outbound protection is a false statement.

Thanks capt, will do. That looks like good info. BTW, I do have a Linsys wireless router, I had no idea that it had its own firewall. I'm embarassed.

Thanks again.

Kevin,

Sorry about the previous post in XP. I didn't even notice capt's URL's -- probably the same ones I was looking for. I did try to contact you via your e-mail link, but when I clicked on it, it said, "must be coming from Computing.net to use this feature." I tried it from both Foxfire and IE.

You are right Kevin. Tnx for correcting my false statement.

Windows Firewall is a stateful host firewall that drops all unsolicited incoming traffic that does not correspond to either traffic sent in response to a request of the computer (solicited traffic) or unsolicited traffic that has been specified as allowed (excepted traffic). This behavior of Windows Firewall provides a level of protection from malicious users and programs that use unsolicited incoming traffic to attack computers. With the exception of some Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) messages, Windows Firewall does not drop outgoing traffic.
