as many of u have seen my post on here i thought i give some tips on makeing avg perform alot better for you folks that use this number 1 software..
1.open avg click services..complete test settings..check box all files ext. heuristic scan and intergrity system
2. click program avg virus vault..file and settings..choose allow file removeing..1 day
u can do this manually as well but 1 day as a back up.3. on control center in program check heuristic scan.
doing things simple things will improve and turn your avg software into a mean virus fighting machine..and as always if avg unable to delete virus put it in virus vault..it will delete itu may notice i dont like macfee norton and all the other crap because they dont delete and most of them crash on site of a virus lol
ever heard of quartineing? lol its still on your computer..why not delete it .......as with avg its free and i use it all the time even bought the professional just cause i figure after 5.5 yrs of useing free i will pay it back to avg..if these tips help in any way feel free to post or any problems u may have.i have set war upon the hackers and virus makers as they dont have anything better to do but try and make problems for peps.
have a nice day.

Since you seem to know alot about AVG, can you configure it to not start at Windows Start Up and only run when you prompt it to.

assuming your on an XP system (I'm using professional edition) go to Start-Run- type in msconfig-select the startup tab...from there deselect "avg32". After restart select the option to NOT start msconfig on start up (not exact words will appear after startup but you get the picture)

as kay said use msconfig in run path click startup and uncheck avg box..warning::
its not wise to disable antivirus protection as it protects u from incomeing viruses thru outlook and internet..it only takes up about
5.2k of ram memory so its not all and u get a big return by being protected the choice is yoursgood luck and have a nice day

Thanks its just sometimes I want it off when installing something or working off line and Yes I do have xp.

Yep, and AVG will restart fine from the "Control Center" shortcut.
The main problem is whether you remember to start it up again afterwards.

Hi
I agree AVG is great but I do seem to have a problem virus that I cannot find any info on.
I keep getting a pop up, on or off line saying I have a trojan horse downloader . Alchemic . A run AVG to remove it. when I run AVG it does not even find it. I have XP, AVG free edition, zone alarm and I have tried various ad removal tools etc with no joy. In the window that pops up telling me this message it also makes mention of something in system restore, a long file name, with exe on the end.
Any help will really be appreciated as I am just a little worried to say the least about it, as I don't want to be spreading it around. Oh! I used to use Kazaa P to P but have removed it from my sytem. At least I have tried to remove it but get a message saying it won't remove it completley because of a missng dll file.
Problems Problems !!
Thanks in hope........
Steve
Kind regardsSteve

morning, evening steve u got a very common problem whats happen is at the time of infection you probably had your system restore enabled therefore what the trojan/virus did was copied itself to one or more of your system restore info so that if u ever restored your system it would be on there..try these few things..and as a rule of thumb keep that avg updated every other day they release new updates..
turn off your system restore restart computer in safe mode..by pressing f8 key when u reboot computer..choose safe mode..login and run avg..
if u are virus free, enable system restore and run avg again..if u still virus free, then its pretty much gone...but if your not and avg says it cant delete it and recommends 4 options choose virus vault..u can later go back and delete it out of vault.as far as zonealarm the regular zonealarm sucks in that it doesnt block everything..but i done serveral control tests with virus sites with zonealarm pro and it blocked every single virus out..so i highly recommend zonealarmpro with web filtering..it has popup blockers and 3rd party blockers as well as banning not so nice websites like porn xxx site and high risk sites so your whole family can enjoy the internet.
more tips u got one of the best antivirus softwares now u need a good firewall protection like zonealarm pro to go withit.
but thats not all u need with todays tech and new threads u need the following as well and its free to ya
ad-ware=this setup probably will seek out spyware malware adware stuff on your computer which am pretty sure u got..heres the website.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
once u get it i can tell ya how to customize it to be even better as custom test is better than defaults.if u still have a problem with the system restore no worries i will guide u thru the process..and dont be afraid to look at avg test results to see where the path of it is at.
good luck and feel free to post.

I have a problem with Downloader.Keenval.B in fact it seems to be multiplying it started with Downloader.Keenval.b and now I have another ending in 'Small B'
I have read your answers to this problem, and was about to follow your instructions up to switching the restore off, when I thought why not just restore at a point before the trojan entered the system as switching off the restore will delete all the restore points/information?
Would this work?
Regards Graham.

Hi again
thanx for all that but stuck at first hurdle i'm afraid. when i try to run avg in safe mode i get a message box saying driver (core) not found winerr=2.steve
Kind regards
Steve

turn system restore off restart computer in normal windows run avg...
if it says cant delete move to virus vault and delete it out yourself on next restart.
now if u still have the problem..make that rescus disk avg has at the bottom of screen this is meant for dos related viruses
it requires 3 1.44 floppy disk and make first disk bootable thru my computer
if avg picks up the virus when u got system restore off ...post your test results here so i can see where its located at and tell ya how to delete them..
u also once u got a virus free system is to run whats called ad-ware..this seeks thru windows registry to see if there is any spyware adware malware..stuff that came with that trojan..also i will try and post a link for ya on that particular trojan.
good luck here is ad-wares website its free and click update first before u run it.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

your system restore entries are probably clean now since avg doesnt pick it up..download this antivirus to check behind avg am pretty sure your ok if you ran scan both with system restore on and off...the "virus itself should be deleted"
http://www.sofotex.com/NOD32-download_L13835.html
avg is a good antivirus but this one just plain rocks as being the "best" paid version with most awards..if this nod32 says your computer is clean then it is clean my friend.ps..did you also run your ad-ware software that finds spyware malware crap that comes with trojans..
post your reply want to know how ya doing am pretty sure avg did its job.
good luck.

Hi again
I ran the Ad war software and it found 31 entries which i deleted, wiped out, Nuked!!
Pesky little things :).. I will try this other one as well to see if it spots any thing. I havent seen any sign of the pop up window since i turned off sys restore.(It wasnt an AVG pop up by the way in case I forgot to mention that it looked like a windows window, if that makes sense, any way it seems to be gone.)I had tried a few so called trojan killers etc before such as trojan remover but none of them found the one I have, or had.
Anyway thanks for all your help, I'll post soon re.sofotex.
Another one right where it hurts for the time wasting no brain virus writers, that are a waste of a good skin!! courtesy of Viruskiller101....Kind regards
Steve

steve i tell ya what.i been useing avg free ed for years now and i thought it was pretty darn solid but now i found an even better one that works well with avg and has won more awards then any other antivirus scanner so if u have time please look/download/try this wonderful antivirus, the awards speak for themselves. its called NOD32 and its one hell of a scanner
http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
also if u have problems with pop ups and such i also tested a pretty solid software firewall and went to alot of sites with known virus and trojans and it safetly blocked out any of them trying to sneak in along with dialers and such....
its zonealarmpro with web filtering
if u decide to get this fine product feel free to email me or ask on this post and i give ya step by step tips on how to tweak it to block out all pop ups 3rd party intruders, and those viruses/trojans.
u can never be too safe
good luck
