Trojan.TDSS issue

August 20, 2009 at 21:49:06
Specs: Windows XP
I'm having an issue where the process iexplorer.exe will run in my task manager when I'm not using Internet Explorer. I'll hear pop-ups being played in the background of my computer, also while I'm not using Internet Explorer, and when I end the process, it will start right back up, sometimes running duplicates.

A Malwarbyte's scan keeps identifying 2 files to be the errors, but when I go to delete them and reboot and run a new scan, they will reappear. Here are the files:

\\?\globalroot\systemroot\system32\UACnucaimedkp.dll (Trojan.TDSS)

\\?\globalroot\systemroot\system32\UACnucaimedkp.dll (Trojan.TDSS)

Also, looking back in my Bitdefender history logs, I noticed a process c:\windows\system32\mshta.exe accessing my network, and soon after my iexplorer.exe and firefox.exe processes were changed.

What can I do to fix my computer? Please help!

Have you tried to do the scan in a safemode state?

I tried to run my computer in safe mode, but when it starts loading all the system files to run, my computer restarts! The cycle continues until I run in normal mode.

TDSS is well known rootkit infection. Sometimes is really hard to remove it. I am afraid that even Safe mode will not help you, because almost all variants of this rootkit are started as a system service in safe mode also.

Iv'e had a quick look at your HJT log , It's not good reading there at least 9 bad entries including this
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\lejemili.dll c:\windows\system32\lutovute.dll
You also have 2 Anti Virus software packages , one will interfere with the other , so decide which one to keep and uninstall the other Revouninstaller in advanced mode , unless the AV site has special uninstall instructions , is best I find .

I recommend that you install Malwarebyte's Antimalware and SuperAntiSpyware Update and run them both
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
http://www.superantispyware.com/sup...
Be sure to shut down wait 5 Min's and restart after each .
I note that your system is XP so shut down system restore as s\r on xp and me will put the nasties back on .

Before you do all this goto device manager >view>show hidden devices and scroll to non-plug and play devices , look for any thing that starts TDSS especially TDSSserver.sys right click and disable , Although they are not often found on recent TDSS attacks .
ps. while your in device manager non plug and play look for UACnucaimedkp.dll and disable if there , do not delete .

If you have dealt with the issues so far then we can deal with your rootkit ,
A rootkit is hidden so we need a tool to " see " it , try RootRepeal , It's a small d\l but it does the job .

http://rootrepeal.googlepages.com/

And this is how to use it , courtesy of Fatdcuk .

http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/...

Remember in your case we are looking for UACnucaimedkp.dll

I would suggest running unhackme to get rid of the rootkit problem:
http://www.greatis.com/unhackme/dow...

Removal Procedure
1. Click the Check button.
2. If a Trojan will be found you will see the Results page.
3. Click on the Stop button and restart your computer.
4. A rootkit will be completely deleted at the next reboot of your computer.

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
