OK, I have this wacky thing that keeps happening, where I can't control the mouse or keyboard, and the computer is opening windows all over the place, opening the start menu, trying to close down currently running programs, trying to .rar the start menu and email it (to nobody) - just crazy stuff. I completely wiped both my hard drives and reinstalled Windows fresh. Had no problems for 10 days or so, and then it started again this morning. It is terribly intrusive, though it doesn't appear to be doing a lot of damage. But it drives me crazy, and can happen any time! I have Zone Alarm, Cacheman and Startup Monitor constantly running. Any ideas? Thanks!

Lorne Murphy:

Is it possible that file backup media--CD or floppy--has some malware on it? It would re-infect the PC every time you copied a file from them.

I suppose it is possible, although the majority of my backup dvd-rs are media files, some of them are install .exes...

I did run a full virus check with Ontrack Fixit, and it reports no virii whatsoever. But this simply has to be something, it is ridiculous. I cringe at the thought that it will happen while i am writing a dvd-r, making it a coaster.

I just ran Trend Micro's free online virus scan as well, and it reports no virii either. I don't get it...

When you wiped the HDs was it a full low-level format? If so, it looks as though you've been re-infected as it's very unlikely that the virus survived, even if it is a boot sector or memory resident one. When you connected to the Inetrnet was there anything suspicous in your e-mails, etc? Also, have you downloaded the latest definitions from Symantec? Is there anything inoccuous looking in the startup items folder? Have you tried a selective step-by-step startup of Win 98 (press F8 on startup and selct from menu) it could have infected system files which load on start-up or added itself to the list.

If nothing works, at least make sure you're not infecting others, try downloading Shields up! from GRC.com I know you said you already have ZoneAlarm installed, which is a highly recommended firewall, but some virri/trojans can disable such software. I had the bugbear virus, which disabled my latest NAV because I hadn't downloaded enough of the latest definitions for Norton to detect it before-hand.

Good luck
