Trojan in explorer.exe & in explorer.cab

AVG found it BTW. AVG cannot remove (embedded) but it says its called "downloader.small.9.BV"

C:\explorer.cab:\explorer.exe (embedded)
&
C:\explorer.cab (infected archive)

is there anything I can do to remove it? This is my Dad's work computer so I cannot mess it up

I have AVG, Spybot, Ad-aware, spyware guard, spyware blaster BTW.

BTW

I did a search on my computer and found explorer.cab here is that right? (screen shot here):

I have the Trogan ads in my explorer exe and it takes 95-99% of the CPU usage. To keep from running at 100% CPU's....in Task Manager, I end the process and then type it back in and the CPU goes back to my normal 4-25%. I do this every time I start the computer up.

Hope it helps!

Always been one to ask questions.

Do you have the original Windows cd - you could delete the infected cab file and restore a clean copy from the cd perhaps?

You say you have old windows? - I take it you mean Windows 98?

Let me know about the above, and I will be better placed to help :-)

Yeah, Windows 98 SE

I was wondering about the .cab file--it is a zip file is that odd? What if I delete it? Will it kill my computer?

No I don't have the cd. I'm not sure what I did with it...:(

Hi Brit,

Sorry its taken me a while to get back to you.

Cab files are just another form of compressed file. Hence why it appears as a zip file, as winzip can read both types.

They are not normally needed, so you can delete this one, as it appears to be where this trojan has put itself.

Update your Anti-Virus (if you havent already done so) and do another scan. You may need to empty your recycle bin as well, otherwise your Anti-Virus will probably pick it up from there as well.
