Comment:

Norton anti-virus identified a download.trojan infection in my browsela.dll file within my system/system32 folder. Norton can't fix, quarantine, or delete it. I tried to delete manually, but it wouldn't.

I went into safe mode, ran Norton scan, and it still wouldn't delete. I also tried to delete it manually in Safe Mode and it wouldn't let me do it...something like "access denied .. another program using, etc."

Any thoughts or can someone point me to a step by step cure for this? It appears that his browsela.dll does not want to be deleted....

thanks

Please post a Hijack This log so that the files associated with the virus/spyware/hijacker can be identified. You can download Hijack This at this link http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ then place it into a folder of it's on, such as C:\HJT, so that back up copies can be made and not clutter your desktop or other folders and the backup copies of deleted items can be easily located if needed, also we will be deleting the temp files.

Once saved double click HijackThis.exe, and press "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents into the text editor at this forum.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

Download win32delfkil.exe from this link http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/win32delfkil.exe and
save it on your desktop.
Double click on win32delfkil.exe and install it. This creates a new folder on your desktop "win32delfkil"

Close all windows, open the win32delfkil folder and double click on fix.bat.
Follow the prompts. It will tell you to shut down your system with the power button make sure you shut down with the power button
Restart your computer afterwards.

Please download smitrem from this link http://www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe and save it to your desktop. Then doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.Don't run it until we boot into safe mode

Then download and run ccleaner to clean out all your temp files. Make sure there is not anything in the recycle bin that you need as ccleaner will delete recycle bin items unless checked not to do so. don't run it until we boot into safe mode

Download Ewido Security Suite then set it up this way Ewido Setup Instructions but don't run until in safe mode

Run Ht again, close all windows and browsers except HT, place a check to the left of the following items and press "fix checked":

Ccleaner will probably kill Hijack This because you did not install it in a folder of it's own as requested.

If that happens reinstall HT as per response #1.

To get HT into it's own folder go to start>my computer>local disk(c:)>File>New>Folder> a new folder will appear with the name box highlighted>type "HJT" without the quotes(or ever what you want to name it) then click a blank spot on the screen.

Download HT,in the file download box click "save", then in the "save in" box click the drop down arrow to the right of the box>click local disk(c:)>click the HJT folder you created >click save. Once it downloads close the window.

Go to start>my computer>local disk (c:)>double click the HJT folder>double click the HJT.zip file>click the HT folder. Run Hijack This

Looks like I missed you somehow. You still have a virus on your computer. If you did not install "FreeRam XP" remove it, if you did of course leave it. Run HT again, close all windows and browsers except HT, place a check to the left of the following item and press "fix checked":

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [FreeRAM XP] "C:\Program Files\YourWare Solutions\FreeRAM XP Pro\FreeRAM XP Pro.exe" -win

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Reboot into safe mode and delete this folder if found:

C:\Program Files\YourWare Solutions

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Ewido is showing the virus in a java file.Go to start>run>control panel>add/remove programs>scroll down to the J's and see what version of java you have.If you don't have version 1.5.0_05 or better you need to update it.

Set up the computer to view hidden files by going to start>control panel>folder options>view tab>tick the circle beside "show hidden files and folders" and untick the box beside "hide extensions of known file types" and "hide protected system operating files">apply>ok.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Sean Fitzpatrick\.jpi_cache\jar\1.0\archive.jar-69086abb-6ad7f241.zip/binny/binny.class and delete the binny (folder) and nothing else. If it will not delete boot into safe mode and try to delete it.
