Subject: Trojan Horse warnings
OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron/512MB
Model/Manufacturer: Compaq/Presario 5BW2
Comment:
Compaq Presario 5000, Model 5BW220, Made 7/19/00, Windows XP Pro, 15 Gig master drive, 37 Gig slave drive, 512 MB RAM, 631 MHz Intel Celeron processor, Compaq 06C0 motherboard.
I have been getting Symantec Trojan Horse notices daily over the last 4 or 5 days. They read: Trojan Horse, C:\temp\$6DF16099.t$m, location: quarantine, access denied. The other two I wrote down read the same except for C:\temp\$563D46A8.t$m and C:\temp\$5C003D2D.t$m. What should I do about these warnings? Thanks for any replies.

Wow, that's an oldie.

Can you empty the C:\temp folder? If you're not able to, try it from Safe Mode.

You might try downloading Ccleaner and running it to clear out MOST of the temp folders.

I have CCleaner. To empty the C:\temp folder do I just right click on it and select delete?

Right-clicking on the folder and hitting delete would get rid of the whole folder. Which would be Ok, since it's not a system folder. Or you could open the folder, select all the contents, and delete those.

Try it from Safe Mode if you can't delete from Normal Mode.

I deleted the temp folder. I used Unlocker for a few items because I got a message on them saying that they were being used. I did not see the Trojan warning items in the temp folder, why not? Were they possibly in a subfolder in temp? The items I deleted did not go to the recycle bin, so where did they go? Are all the items in the temp folder always junk, and some a serious threat, so should I continually just delete all the items the temp folder? Thanks.

Sounds like the rogue files were hidden.

If you ever run into that again, go to Folder Options in the Control Panel, and the second tab is View. In View, you want to toggle Show Hidden Files And Folders, and uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files. Ignore the warning not to do this. Then you'll see everything.
