Subject: Trojan Horse virus helpOS: Windows XpCPU/Ram: ? |
Comment: Hi, I'm sure this question has been asked numerous times but I don't know if the solution is specific to my particular problem so I figured I'd ask it again. MY Norton antivirus detects that I have the Trojan horse virus, and I'd very much like to know how to get rid of it. I remember coming to this forum a few years ago for a similar problem and I remember it being very helpful, so I figured I'd give it a shot again. Here is the exact wording of the problem: The compressed file polall1s.exe within C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp\THI2E9B.tmp\speer.cab is infected with the Trojan Horse virus. Please in as simple of terms as possible explain to me how to remove this completely from my computer. Thanks very much. Oh yeah, I'm running Windows XP.

Reply: (edit)Try running CCleaner - as you can tell from the location of the file, it's in a temporary folder - although you would think that Norton would have been capable of removing or cleaning it There may be other issues "Oh yeah, I'm running Windows XP."
Yes - the point of filling out the "OS: Windows Xp" field was to provide that information I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter

Reply: (edit)Remove ALL the temp folders manualy under all users. make sure hidden files and folders is enabled. also. Clear out your Internet Explorer SSL Cache. DO ALL THIS IN SAFE MODE! after that. Uninstall Norton, and find a Spyware and Virus protection that actually works. Norton use to be good in the 90's. now, its just bloatware and doesnt do a whole lot. Or try http://remotepclabs.com There really good, really fast, and dirt cheap. I choose the Support Minutes plan. Usualy everything is fixed under 20 minutes. They only charge for actual work. not research time and all that.. hope that helps you

Reply: (edit)Go straight to this page http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/ln... Download both the free AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Spyware programs (Read up on them both on the home page). The AVG Antivirus 7.5 'free' version is very good and always current. Configure it to update file signatures automatically. The Anti-Spyware 7.5 'free' is effective in looking inside zip and compressed folders, something a lot of other spyware programs don't do. You have to manually update the free version but you won't mind as it's free (the paid version updates itself). Don't wait, do it now. And uninstall that crappy old Norton.

Reply: (edit)ok I downloaded Ccleaner, ran it and rebooted. I then ran Norton again, and it still said I had this virus. The next day I uninstalled Norton and downloaded both AVG programs as was suggested. When I ran Avg, it found no viral threats. How is this possible? Is the computer still infected? Or did it go undetected? Anyway to be sure? thanks
