Comment:

Hello,

I connected to my laptop from my desktop wirelessly for the first time today, and tried to access C:/Programme Files/Windows, when an AVG pop-up appeared identifying the presence of this "Trojan horse SHeur.AGDC" worm problem associated with a file called "DUP.vgv.exe".

The AGV Free 8.0 is on the desktop; the laptop has got CA e-Trust suite on it.

Googling has not yielded any info regarding this "trojan", and I'm not entirely sure whether it's a false positive or not - there are similar sounding "Trojan SHeur"s reported, but nothing on this precise one (if it exists).

I've run the CA e-Trust antivirus scan with no results; I've run Spybot S&D with no results.

All I can say for sure is the laptop runs far too slow for its spec, and has done for some time.

I've run Bootvis on it, and identified a long (113second) "logon + service" time, which only optimised to 110 secs; so a long way off being right.

I don't really want to have to perform anything too exotic or extreme on the laptop, as I'm short of a USB harddrive to transfer the Gigs of data on it just yet.

Could anyone please suggest anything?

cheers,,,

Please run these scans and post there logs as they should help identify the baddies.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these sites:

MalwareBytes1

MalwareBytes2

1. Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
2. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
3. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
4. Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
5. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
6. Make sure that everything found is checked, and click Remove Selected.
7. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
8. The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
9. Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2:

Download the "HijackThis" Installer from this link:
Hijack This

1. Save " HJTInstall.exe" to your desktop.
2. Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
5.Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
7. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
8. Paste the log in your next reply.
9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

If you have trouble installing or running MalwareBytes or Hijack This do the following:

If you got them downloaded rename the setup file then try installing them again.

Right click the mbam-setup.exe file> click rename> rename it something.exe then try to run it. If it installed but will not run navigate to this folder:

C:\Programs Files\Malwarebytes' AntiMalware

Rename the mbam.exe file then try to run it again, if still no luck rename all the .exe files in the MAlwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder and try to run it again.

For Hijack This rename the Hijack This.exe file to something else and try installing it again.

Please download ComboFix to the desktop from one of the following links:

Link1

Link 2

Link 3

Combofix is a powerful tool so follow the instructions exactly or you could damage your computer.

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with Combofix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on This Link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

In your case to run Combofix do the following:
1. Go offline turn off your CA antivirus, Spybot, ZoneAlarm and any other antispyware that you may have.
2. Run Combofix and save its log.
3. Restart the computer to get the antivirus running again but leave the antispyware programs off until we get the computer cleaned.
4. Post the Combofix log.

Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double-click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
(Don't click on the window while the program is running or move the mouse, it will cause your system to hang.)
Please post the log it produces.

Hallo,

I have actually got an instance of ComboFix installed on the laptop's C:\ drive.

Should I uninstall it, and reinstall it afresh?

I don't know where ZoneAlarm is (i.e. I'm not aware of installing it)... a search only brings up a couple of GIFs... no prog!

The combofix log was too big to post (654KB), so the best I can come up with is to upload it to some webspace I've got:

Open Notepad and copy/paste everything between the X"s into it and make sure the first word (such as KILLALL, Or File, etc.) is at the very top of the page.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
KILLALL::
File::
C:\sqmnoopt03.sqm
C:\sqmdata03.sqm
C:\sqmnoopt02.sqm
C:\sqmdata02.sqm

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Go to File on the top bar and choose" Save As", Change the "Save As Type" to All Files, Name it CFScript.txt then save it to your desktop.
Then drag/drop the CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe (the red symbol on your desktop) if combofix does not auto start click "run".

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

2. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
3. Click Start
4. When asked, allow the activex control to install
5. Click Start
6. Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked ( Iwant to see what is found first), and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
7. Click Scan
8. Wait for the scan to finish
9. Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
10. Copy and paste that log in your next reply.

I tell you what rings a bell... that is says "Siamese PC"... those are files from an old PC that had "problems", and I may have been through something like this before about 5 years ago!

I wonder, does that mean that anywhere those files have been; or any CD they might be on are "infected" in some way?!

Can I just delete these then?

I can see the:
DUPvgv.exe
wfallsfree.exe
35713.exe
files in the reported folders...

Is there a way of adding their names to a database to "immunise" against them?

I've got quite a decent router now with an integrated firewall; I wonder what I can do with that?

Set up the computer to view hidden files:
To show hidden files do the following:
Click Start > My Computer
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
Under the Hidden files folder, locate and check Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply > OK.

Navigate to and delete these files if found:

C:\DUPvgv.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jac\My Documents\Old Recovered Files\595MB Siamese PC\wfallsfree.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\35713.exe

Run an online scan with Kaspersky from the following link:
Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
3.Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
4. Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
5. Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
6. Click View scan report at the bottom.
7. Click the Save Report As... button.
8. Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
Close any open programs.
Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Well, it's improved a tiny bit, but could be faster...

The laptop (P(M) 1.7GHz 2GB RAM) boots up in just over a minute and shuts down in just over half a minute.

I suppose I could run Bootvis a few times, but the desktop I've got (P42.4GHz 1GB RAM) boots up in under half a minute and shuts down in about 10 secs.

Any ideas please?

Yup... still really slow.

It takes about four or five minutes from pressing the on button to being able to click the start menu.

It seems to be related to Firefox, as IE loads much quicker and is more usable.

There's definitely something substandard about the laptop performance compared to the spec.
