I just found that I have the trojan horse Downloader.realtens.CPY and I can't seem to remove it with my AVG Free Edition antivirus. It won't heal it or anything. Can anyone tell me how to remove this. And by the way... I am not that computer smart!!

Well, if your really concerned about having viruses and not that computer smart then the best thing to do is to get a version of Mcafee or Norton anti-virus. Most free editions just try to make you scared enough to pay for the real thing. Regardless it seems you would like to remove it so you'll have to pay for the real version.

There is no "free" way unless your willing to learn alot about computers ^^.

if avg cannot remove the file, than it is usually protected by windows. try this:

open avg 6 for windows (not the control centre), view the test results, here you'll find the file name and path. restart your computer in safe mode and delete the infected file manually.

and if u want to buy the 'real thing', then you're far better off buying avg 7, kapersky or f-command, than norton, they're faster, more efficient, more user friendly and gentle to your computer's resources

The thing you have to remember angela is that if you go the route of buying an antivirus that only geeks use, you'll have a very hard time learning to use it.

The good thing about Norton/Mcafee is their user friendly, alot of people use it, and because of this you can learn alot from others at work, school, family, etc.... Also the fact that they update thier signitures faster than the others proves thier worth and justifies thier expense. It's not worth it if they update their program AFTER you get the virus.

Personally i use Mcafee and I like Kapersky and have used it off and on since it's introduction. I hate Norton because it bogs down my computer (but still recommend it because of thier reputation), and I have no clue why anybody would want to use AVG, Zonealarm or Blackice but thats just my personal opinion.

Actually, we use AVG at our school and it is a great free virus program. It will take care of the virus if you turn off system restore and reboot in safe mode. To reboot in safe mode, go to start - run and type msconfig. Choose Diagnostic startup. When the computer restarts, run AVG and it should work. Be sure to type msconfig again afterwards and switch back to normal mode and to turn system restore back on. Good luck!

Angela,
Could you remove finally the trojan horse?
I have the same problem at the moment, the trojan horse downloader realtens. With the AVG anti-virus system I was able to remove all kind of virusses, except that one.
What did you do?
I'm getting mad here, I have to finish my thesis for school, and the sites I need can't be opened :-(

I too have the same problem as Angela and I have found the following web site which details how to eliminate this monster. First off, it ain't easy to get rid of. AVG offers a program to eliminate it, but it does not work. The following link comes from Norton's site and though it references using their AV program, any including AVG will probably work. The procedure is long and complicated, but it should work.

Summary:

The following instructions pertain to all current and recent Symantec antivirus products, including the Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus product lines.

1. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
2. Update the virus definitions.
3. Disconnect from the Internet.
4. Restart the computer in Safe mode or VGA mode.
5. Unregister the browser helper object.
6. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as Downloader.MSCache.
7. Clear the Temporary Internet Files folder, if required.

For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions.

I'm sorry, but it is not constructive to just criticise the software being used and spout opinions when people need help out here! Neither myself or my son are numpties when it comes to computing and we are struggling with this one. We shall try the constructive help supplied in one or two of the replies. Thank you to those who are trying to help.
