Trojan Horse Downloader Agent GPZ

Gateway G6-333c

Specs: XP SP2, 333 mhz/256 MB

My AVG antivirus scan turned up a trojan horse in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ActiveScan\sporder.dll. It calls the trojan horse "Trojan horse Downloader.Agent.GPZ. AVG can't heal it, and I don't know what else to do to get rid of it.

Please post a Hijack This log so that the files associated with the virus/spyware/hijacker can be identified.

Please download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

Please download SmitRemFix from this link http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip Then extract the contents to your desktop.

!!!! Only run option #1 as runing the other options on an uninfected computer will damage the desktop.!!!!

Open the "SmitfraudFix" folder and double-click "smitfraudfix.cmd"
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Life interrupted my online time.

I found reference to this problem on another site that linked it to Panda Scan, which I had on my computer, so I used the remove program in the control panel to get rid of it, then did a manual scan and found the virus gone. I thought I had the problem solved, but discovered today that I still have it, only it's moved to another folder:

C:\SystemVolumeInformation\_restore{E496C625-9A34-43B-3-B3E9-6F48D592389D}\RP700\A0157309.dll

I'm downloading the hijackthis program and will get you the information requested as soon as possible. I may have to do it after work tonight (I'll get off sometime between 11:30 - Midnight).

Thank you so much for your help!!

First open notepad by going to start> run>type in notepad in the space provided> ok. Then click format> click "word wrap" to remove the check then exit notepad.

Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/ We will need it later in safe mode

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware We will need this later in safe mode

Be sure to update AVG Anti- Spyware

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Ok ... I downloaded and installed hijackthis, ATF-Cleaner and AVG anti-spyware. I printed out your instructions above and began doing them. I got into safe mode and AVG anti-spyware was still on my desktop, but hijackthis and ATF-Cleaner were not. I did a search (still in safe mode) and couldn't find ATF-Cleaner, and the only hijackthis.exe I could find was a pf file in the prefetch folder.

Now what? Can I do all this stuff in normal mode?

My mistake ... I got to thinking about it and couldn't understand why my husband's account was in safe mode, but not mine. I had gone into "Administrator" and couldn't find anything except AVG. I went back into safe mode, but this time I used the up/down buttons to scroll down and found my account. I went in there and found everything I needed. I followed your instructions in safe mode and here is my AVG Anti-spyware log as requested:

AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report

Thank you so much for all your help. I hope this has taken care of the problem. One thing I find odd though, I upgraded my AVG antivirus to 7.5 and the scheduled scans don't show up on the results list. Just the ones that I do manually. I have to go into the log to find the scheduled scan results. Is that something new with AVG? Because all the previous versions showed ALL the test results - scheduled & manual - in the "Test Results" section.

Hi,

I've been having the same problem with downloader.agent.gpz since 1 Nov. Unfortunately I ran AVG anti-spyware a few days ago without knowing what I was doing. It found another couple of trojans, and I actioned the deletion without saving the scan and I can't remember what they were. I've emptied the restore program (AVG found one offending item there), and run AVG antivirus and anti-spyware in safe mode, also the Trend Micro Housecall online scan, the Symantec online virus check and Panda Software anti-virus scan. All show the machine to be virus-free, but can I be sure?

Here's the latest hijack this file:
