I am using AVG 7.0 which picked up a trojan horse dialer.8.bc in file C:\DOCUMENTS&SETTINGS\OWNER\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES\CONTENT.IE5\WVNRUG99\ AVG could not heal this virus, I have moved it to the vault. My comp is on a nettwork connected through a DLINK DSL-504 but we do not shear files. Could someone please if this virus can be removed and how.

Many thanks in advance

eldesh

Its a dialer, and a good chance you got it via some web site. Until it activates itself you probably won't find it via anti-virus software.

Just delete the file so it cannot activate.

No. Matter of fact you can delete EVERYTHING in this directory safely, some things may require redownloading but nothing critical.

Are you sure about the name of that "dialer"?
HERE is a list of known "dialers", but I can't find yours.
I don't think deleting that file will work, because there is surely some registry entry, which will recreate that file after reboot.

I too have had a problem with this virus. It infected 2 files today when I clicked on to a Free Utilities website( I did not knowingly download anything). Avg picked them up but could not 'heal' them and suggested they be put into their Vault, which I did. From there I deleted them on the basis that they were Temp internet files and therefore it should be safe to do so. I disengaged System Restore and carried out an online scan with Panda. They found no trace. Does this mean that I am clear or can they still be lurking in the register etc,?
