Subject: Trojan GPZ and GUD? log attached
OS: Windows XP Professional
CPU/Ram: Pentium 4 2.53 gh 256 m
Model/Manufacturer: Dell Dimension 4550
Comment:

AVG shows "Trojan horse Downloader.Agent(s) GPZ and GUD in scan logs from 10/31 & 11/1, says they are unfixable, but does not show them in subsequent scans. Windows Defender, Spyware Guard and Spywareblaster never indicated anything. AVG did not indicate a threat at the time these were apparently installed, but it has warned me of a potential threat on two other occasions, so I know it is working. Spybot and AdAware show nothing but the usual cookies. Do I indeed have a problem, and if so, what's next? I am familiar with Hijackthis. Any advice apppreciated. Thanks.

Could you please post a Hijack This log.

Please download SmitRemFix from this link http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/Smitfra... Then extract the contents to your desktop.
!!!! Only run option #1 as runing the other options on an uninfected computer will damage the desktop.!!!!
Open the "SmitfraudFix" folder and double-click "smitfraudfix.cmd"
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Since my original post, I realize that AVG put these two trojans in the virus vault without alerting me. When checking the scan logs I mistakenly thought they were active. I have since deleted them. However, since going this far, I submit the scans for your inspection. I am curious about item 018 in the HJT log, as it looks strange to me. The 015 items are all known and OK. Thanks for the reply.

Please download Dr Web CureIt to your desktop from this link ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan.
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives.
A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable.
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log on your desktop.

Here ya go--the short scan was clean. Item three in the long scan, WONWebLauncherControl.ocx
is a necessary download for playing Hoyle online games. If it's been eliminated, it should reload next time I visit the site. The last two items, I have no clue. Thanks.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall these programs:

BearShare Test

MediaLoads

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

Run CCleaner from normal mode.

Download the latest version of http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".

The MediaLoads file "could not be found, may have been previously deleted". The Java asked to install a BHO, which I allowed. Here's the Panda scan

MediaLoads showed up in the uninstall list that you created with Hijack This so it is listed in Window's add/remove programs.

Navigate to and delete these files:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{BEE3E87E-E1C6-4bfe-BE9D-48E84271AB34}\components\whenu_ff.dll

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{BEE3E87E-E1C6-4bfe-BE9D-48E84271AB34}\chrome\whenu_ff.jar

Are you running ok now, or have you had anymore hits from the virus?

The MediaLoads item does not appear in "add/remove windows components", I searched every last sub-category of every item twice. Maybe it went away with the restore points. Everything appears to be working great, and there are no more hits in the AVG log. Thanks so much for your help.
