Trojan Downloader

I have a friend who has avg anti virus and it is reporting a "trojan downloader" but it cannot remove it. I have no idea where to start. Can anyone reccomend some free software that removes it?

Make sure you know the path to that "trojan downloader". Normally the antivirus program gives you information in which path. If your antivirus doesnt give any path info than just search for it using windows search files function. Than Try to do a safe boot (during boot, than when the XP logo comes, press F8).
