I have the latest version of spybot and adaware and also run spywareblaster, Norton is also up to date. I usually run the spyware stuff every couple of days and don't have any problems with that junk until recently. I am on AOL and have the pop up blocker activated and also in IE I have the google toolbar with the pop up blocker activated. Lately I am getting a few pop ups on sites, no specific sites just anywhere and sometimes I get those floating adds on the page or one where if you scroll down it follows you and you can't find the X to close out of the add. Today was the last straw, I was on some site and weather bug wanted to download and install and I wasn't even anywhere trying to do that I was searching for song lyrics. Also get a tan screen on some sites asking about installing and IE plugin sometimes. I know it has to be spyware but how do I find it and get rid of it? I also ran cwshredder and it's still going on. I don't think this stuff is site specific so I must have something on here causing this and it seems to be getting worse. Here is one example of a site I have visited a long time and never had a problem until recently. Lyrics site I get a pop up that's a blank white screen and the address says http:/media42.fastclick. Now is this add junk on the site or is it coming from my computer or what is going on please?
Another thing is today I got a tan screen on a few sites that said you IE settings will prohibit you running active X controls on this site. I have the update to the free version of zonealarm and I remember when it installed it had a box checked for something about IE so could that be causing this message to pop up?Happy AOL user for 4yrs.

Try using the full performance test at http://www.pcpitstop.com/ Pay special attention to the security results. They have an autofix to set your settings correctly. These settings have never caused me any problems. Another site to check your browser security setting is browsercheck. Remember that there is a trade off betwenn easy surfing and security when using browsercheck's fixes. I have never used AOL, so I do not know what protection they offer and I cannot help you with any of their settings. If all else fails, you could to download and use Mozilla for your daily browser, as they offer great security with no popups and no hijacks.

I don't udnerstand why after two years this has started happening, I have changed nothing in my settings? I found out about Pc pitstop not long ago and ran that and it said no problem with security but I ran it again tonight and it says the same thing. I was not getting any pop ups at all with my blocker and now I am getting I don't know what kind but I guess they are not the normal kind you get that a pop up blocker will stop. The site I gave is one example and if you did not get that pop up when going there then it must be something hidden on my computer and not from that site. I have looked through my hijack this log but I really don't know what to look for in there so maybe someone here would check it for me please?

Mary, I now advertisers are constantly "upgrading" there products. I have experienced a few popups and banners, but nothing like what you are encountering. I essentially have and use all the programs you have, except for AOL.

My sister called me a week or so ago and said her computer was really screwed up. I went over and took a look at it. She supposedly had hit a website in canada that was supposed to have had a web cam to view a moutain or something. Well what she got was everything but. By the time I got to her computer she was completely unable to view websites for all the popups that were comming up and she had a popup stopper installed. I looked in add and remove programs and the site had installed about four differant programs that caused this and also loaded a tool bar she didnt want. I ran adaware and found 200 plus objects. The faster I deleted the objects with adaware the programs that had been installed were downloading more. It was quite a chore getting her system completely clean of the trojans and spyware she had got just from one website. Take a look in add and remove programs and see what you might have picked up that could cause this. Take note of the objects that keep comming back into adware and see where they are comming from and go from there is my suggestion.
May God forgive, and bless the United States.

I know it's has to be spyware but adaware and spybot are not picking it up and I do have spywareblaster updated and activated. Any other spyware program I can use to scan? It's not just happening on AOL. I am on cable so even if I don't activate the AOL software at all and just browse with IE it's happening and only recently, last two weeks or so, same set up for almost 2yrs. now. Another example where I got a floating pop up on the page was weather.com so I don't think that site would be doing that on purpose to people.
Happy AOL user for 4yrs.

Another program that might help you in your fight against spyware is ie_spyad. Type in google and read about it. It works for me.
May God forgive, and bless the United States.

That's the thing there is nothing unusual in add remove programs and when I run adaware and spybot they come up clean. A few days ago they showed about 4 things and I deleted but now they scan clean so either I am going crazy or it's something that's not being picked up. No one has been on any questionable sites of any sort. I know what goes on in my house with the computer and I am bascially the only one that uses it. The next time I get one of those floating ones I will screen capture it.

I noticed you said spyware blaster but do you hvae spyware gaurd? Its a shame we have to have so much to protect us.

disable windows messenger service. It can allow strange popups. This is not the same as MSN messenger.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp

That should be done alright but that doesnt usually come from websites. That just pops up at random in seperate boxes.
May God forgive, and bless the United States.

NoAds for pop ups - you teach_it learns.
Don't forget the simple tools like disk cleanup and delete offline content in Internet Options.
Good luck

Mary,
Be aware that the fix suggested by blackdogx
(see response No. 9 above) will totally disable your windows messenging service. If for some reason you still need Windows messaging enabled, you can use a firewall to block inbound NetBIOS and UDP broadcast traffic instead. For further info, read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 330904, "Messenger Service window that contains an Internet advertisement appears."
Just copy and paste the following url to your browser:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q330904
Hope this helps

If you are using AOL I know that they automatically try and instal Real Player everytime you try to access the internet. Chances are that you have this program running, and it is filled with spyware junk. I would get rid of real player, and AOL for that matter.

I have windows messenger disabled, it has been disabled from day one when I set the computer up so I know about that and these are not those kind of pop ups. I don't have spywareguard so I will install that. I have been with AOL 5yrs. now and not once has it ever tried to install real player when I am on the net, never heard of AOL doing that before, AOL has it's own player so it doesn't need real player that I know of. Every time I visit this site I get a different pop up and that was not happening up until two weeks ago so is it just adds they have now installed on the site?

Hi Mary,
To add what S.T.A.R said here;
http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/12088.htmlI went to that site with active
scripting enabled, got the pop-up from
media fastclick.
The IE Spyad that doc and I use, will only
show a blank pop-up.IE-SPYAD: Restricted Sites List for Internet Explorer
Get this into your restricted site zone, will save you furture headaches.

The "floating" ones are probably Hover ads and many advertisers are switching to those because as yet no popup blocker program can catch them. The only way to block them is to disable javascript.
It's an arms race between the advertisers and the popup blocker programmers and Microsoft is very much on the side of the advertisers. A "reputable" website manager will set his popups to only display once per hour or day when you visit his site; many disreputable/stupid ones blast you with every popup/spyware they can because they're getting paid by the spyware sites for each machine they infect.

I don't know if any one has suggested that you disable system restore on xp
this may be why you keep getting these things you are talking about
system restore may be restoring them as you delete them with the spyware killersbe warned that if you disable system restore that you loose all of your restore points from the time you disable it on back
