think i have an virus

i had an malware virus called favealert , tried running all different spyware/adware programs without success . re-started pc looking for options to start in safe mode but for some reason didnt have the option booted straight into windows log in screen. didnt really know what i was doin but i had read on one of the forums that you can set to run in safe mode through msconfig in windows which i did ( ticked a box ). re-started windows and hooray safe mode , but hey hang on it now wont accept any log in details , passwords etc etc .so rebooted again yet now seems ironic cant get out of safe mode now lol . tried all combos f8 ctrl ....all of them now my pc has completely stopped booting up just get an blank black screen .
please please please can some one help as i yet again have been stupid and never back my pc up , i have bearly five years of personnel info i really dont want to lose .
if anyone can help i would appreciate it . many thanks rich

thanks for your reply but as it says in small writing this will only detect the problem not fix it . also i need some sort of bootable disc as the problem is on boot up . thanks
