I am not posting this to upset anyone but this has me a bit perplexed.

Yesterday Capt said there was an Ad-Aware update but I could not get one via the automatic update feature and now cannymum states there is one and again I cannot get the update via the auto updater.

So I looked at a few things a little closer and I no longer have the latest build of Ad-Aware so I cannot get the latest update and this is total BS in my opinion.

If Lavasoft wants to remain in the game as a spyware/malware remover they need to start updating the program with new builds when folks download updates.

So I hope the folks at Lavasoft are going to take some action because having to re-download and install the program all over again is getting a little old.

If what I think your saying is true, you would not have had any updates for quite some time if you're not running Ad-aware 6.181. This has been out for quite some time now. UNLESS of course there is a later version (I can't find it but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist) out there. But you're right in what you say
'they need to start updating the program with new builds when folks download updates.'

Kevin has a new love interest now, and, therefore, wouldn't recognize an update if it bit him in the...well,you know, hind parts. LOL

He did, however, get the latest "download" from his love interest tonight, with updated definitions, and no connection problems.

;-)

My bitch is that I have to download a new version of Ad-Aware every few months in order for the built in updated to work properly.

I should not have to go and get the latest build to get the latest updates. It is very annyoing in my opinion to due so.

Yes, I have a woman in my life now :) but that still does make up for the lack of Lavasoft not making a better product.

Long live Spybot :)

One other is that I inform my clients to use Ad-Aware and I show them how to check for updates and when they see there is not a new one they will not get it because I do not tell them they need to look for a new build they need to download.

I'm just going to kiss Ad-Aware goodbye until they fix this problem and if they cannot fix this issue in the free version then so be it.

At the current time I have at least 20 clients that if they try to update Ad-Aware will not get an update because they lack the latest build and it is my fault because I did not inform them that Lavasoft has such a poor auto updater and they need to take yet another step to protect there PC's. At least I know they are getting proper build and updates with Spybot.

Except that Spybot's users (like me) are moochers, so when he goes off board for a week or 2 at a time, like recently, no-one has the right to complain. He's incommunicado, and that's HIS business. I wouldn't be utilizing that sort of system for business clients, if downtime (interruption of updates) was an issue.

That's a lot of complaining about somthing that's free. Why don't you post your suggestion on the Lavasoft forum? :)

So, at the risk of opening a can of worms,
which is better. Spybot or adaware? or are they different things to different people?

Kevin,

i have sometimes similar probs when updarting.Sometimes it updates by trying a second time or a third time clicking on "update"and sometimes i go out of Ad-Aware open it again and then i can update. But most of the time it works fine.
But there's certainly a problem there.

Suzi,

I'm American so I can be lazy and complain about free products :)

Yes I should be complaing to Lavasoft but they are already aware of the problem and I heard they where going to fix it a few months ago, well they have not.

Doghead,

At least Spybot will allow me to get updates a month later without having to download the latest build. Most of my clients are not computer savy folks, they pay me lots of money to give them solid advice and to inform them on how to keep there computers clean of spyware.

I will continue to use Ad-Aware but I will not leave it on a clients system until they get there act together.

"There is a completely redesigned Webupdate feature in developement that will have the capabilities of completely updating the core files as well as all other aspects of the progam including the Reference Files and PlugIns. This will be made available when the new version of Ad-aware 6.2 is released. This is in developement and the release date has not been announced yet."

So once again I will have to download a new build to get things working as they already should have. Lavasoft needs to get their act together a lot faster than they have.

Why do we use Spybot??? Because Ad-Aware updates dropped off the face of the earth for a few months and now this BS.

Great program but very poor support. I will be very surprised to see build 6.2 come out for download within the next 3 months.

My math should be pretty close here ...

Ad-Aware has released 23 reference file updates since the start of the year. That is one every 2.8 days.

I don't use SpyBot, so I can't give comparative figures, but I would be very surprised from my perusal of the forums if it was anything similar to Ad-Aware.

I don't find it that difficult to update either the software or the reference files.

AND, it's free ...

23 updates in 9 1/2 weeks.
That's more than Kim Bassinger got!
Ya gotta be happy with that kind of support.
