Have you installed any new software recently?

Use Task manager to end explorer.exe and then use it again to open explorer.exe and see if its still the same.

Do you have any other user accounts you can use to check if its the same on all of them?

There are variants of this file which are trojans. You could try repair and see how that goes. It is what displays your windows logon screen and it can be edited to change the appearance of this.

Have you tried to rename the start button or change Windows logon screen at all?

Repair should hopefully put it to default for you otherwise if you delete I'm not sure if OS will re-install automatically or not but i'm guessing it would

Event logs are in control panel > administrative tools

this is a warning i found in the event viewer:

A provider, OffProv10, has been registered in the WMI namespace, Root\MSAPPS10, to use the LocalSystem account. This account is privileged and the provider may cause a security violation if it does not correctly impersonate user requests.

Geo, do you have a Windows XP Installation CD? If so, it may be a good idea to do a Repair Install with it. It recopies all of the OS's files with the original ones. That may stop those errors. Yes, sometimes XP does recopy one of it's system files, but not in every case. A Repair Install may fix any other present system files that have been infected.

It's just a thought.

I believe in the Big Bang. God said it, and BANG it happened!

Not being able to open task manager is a a symptom of a virus I just cleaned from my computer. Norton Antivirus failed to prevent or detect it. I uninstalled Norton and installed AVG's free virus scanner. Identified the files and deleted them. See my post regarding "onoes.exe" in this forum for more details.
