Aztro for what its worth:
I find Symantec (Norton) antivirus is very good. The only reason I use it over MacAfee is that when I first used it 1 year ago it was easier to install and use. I also liked its automatic update feature. The best anti-trojan package I have found is AdAware which is not free. As a check I also use SpyBOT (which is freeware) and between the two they find most things. I have SpyBlaster installed as well. Just wish they had auto-updating like Norton. Don't forget that trojans will try and send stuff back out of your computer so a firewall like Sygate Personal Firewall Pro will catch anything trying to get out. If pop-ups tick you off try AdSubtract. Guess my message is you need defense in depth and one package wont do the whole job. Most packages have a trial option and I really recommend you try several.

Hope this helps
Graham

Ad-aware IS available FREE!! You should add CWShredder to the above list of (free) programs - it is specifically for Coowebsearch homepage highjacker (www.mreijn.org, scroll down to 19 jan 2004).

I use Spybot, AdAware, Spyware Blaster, and a search brings up "Avenue A, Inc" in about every file on my computer. How can I block "Avenue A, Inc" from loading. Some software blocks "Avenue A, Inc" from loading but dose not seem to remove it. Vic
P.S. It looks like this web Site is also trying to load "Avenue A, Inc" every time. Vic

Check out the ratings at Virus Bulletin(NOD32 is in 1st place, Norton 2nd). Some other sites for rating for trojan programs are at http://www.pcflank.com/ and http://wilders.org/ BoClean is used by many universities, TDS and several others are also like Trojan Remover, Trojan Hunter and Tauscan are quite good.

Check the tests at ISCA Labs.

Their site is down for maintenance until tomorrow.

vicsvw - Are you getting AvenueA cookies? An updated (webupdate)full scan with Ad-aware 6.181 should get it for you. When you click on "scan now', make sure "custom" is checked, not "smart". If it's just tracking cookies, you can set Cookiewall to automatically delete them

I can't honestly say what is the best av program.
KAV Personal 4.5 is good if you have the resources. It is configurable and updates daily.KAV 5.0 is in beta and may be even better. That's due for release sometime later this year.
Dr.Web is light on resources, has strong heuristics and updates daily. It's cheaper than KAV Personal.
You can have false positives from the heuristics.I haven't had any yet though.
Personal criteria can vary for individuals,so you are better off trialing some av's one at a time to see what is best for you.

For a/t programs I prefer the Cleaner Professional 4.0.
The program has been improved and updates have been almost daily.
The monitoring components (TCActive and TCMonitor)are nice features and the scanner is faster than the older version was.
There is a 30 day trial available.

Hope this helps ya,
JB.

The LiveUpdate feature of Norton AV makes it as dangerous as a virus. If LiveUpdate works, it's great, but if it screws up, it can cost you LOTS of time, and ultimately money, and Norton does not care, they are too big. Avoid it at all costs. There are lots of others. Use NOD 32.
