Folks,

We all no that LavasoftUSA has gone nuts with its updates. Tonight I was at a clients house and I had updated Ad-Aware and when I went to show him how to use the program there was another update. In a 30 to 45min time frame they had a new update. Now here comes my question and I welcome all responses.

What is the point for all these new updates for users that have systems that contain no spyware? Everyone that says here is an update and everyone that says thanks has no problem with spyware. We have our systems locked down tight. To prove this point I just updated Ad-Aware and ran it and guess what, nothing was found.

As I've said in the past I do not mind folks posting about the updates but who is this helping? It does not help those infected and it does not help those that no better because we are not infected. I would prefer if LavasoftUSA issued an update once a week and not one every hour.

Also Ad-Aware is not the end all program for spyware removal. After I ran Ad-Aware I ran Spybot and it found 28 more problems that Ad-Aware missed. This is why we preach to use both. Just because one program updates like a mad man does not mean it is the best.

I will always allow the updates to be posted but from a real world perspective they are pointless because the only people that care about them already have a system that is spyware free.

It would also be nice if LavasoftUSA explained why they are coming out with updates as quickly as they are.

Points well taken...makes sense to me. I just post them as a courtesy to all; but I can understand the recent barrage of all them also.
Either way, I don't mind. b.t.w...my Spybot doesn't find anything, lately. So I was surprised that you picked that many nasties. What have you been surfing????????

KTTD, it appears that teams are working independently identifying malware. When they develop a fix it seems to be released without the stategy of say a company like Symantec. I always recommend Spybot and Adaware, but it does seem like once the system is clean Adaware does the job. It has been a very long time that Spybot catches something that Adaware has missed on my system. It has not always been this way.

I used to run Spybot first and then Ad-Aware and Ad-Aware would always find a few things left over.

I now run Ad-Aware first with the latest updates and Spybot always finds things that Ad-Aware missed and Spybot has not had a huge update any time soon. This is why I use both programs but I cannot speak for my clients because once I leave I am not there to run the programs.

I also install SpywareBlaster to help out and inform them to stay away from Kazaa.

Out or curiosity, I went to some shady sites on purpose, because it was bugging me about Spybot. I figured I'd certainly pick up some tracking cookies from going to some adult sites. Now the test.....
Ran Spybot first, and it picked up -zero-.
Ran Adaware, it found 6 tracking cookies. So I don't know what's up with Spybot...I'm wondering if I've got it set up correctly.
Anyone else notice anything about Spybot too??? Just curious.

Ad-Aware picks up tracking cookies that Spybot will miss. This is why I use both when I am on a job. Ad-Aware though is far from perfect and I know that first hand because it does miss items.

I have thought a lot about this dilema as well. Why does spybot pick up things ad-aware dont? Why dont the makers of ad-aware run spybot and find out what spybot picks up and include them in their software if indeed it is legit spyware? And just what is included in all these ad-aware updates? I wonder when someone will hack ad-aware and when you think you are downloading a update to ad-ware you are downloading someones destructive hack. Just a few things I have wondered.

The people at Adaware have a lot of nerve finding new Spyware and writing fixes for it, because it's obvious that they haven't considered how inconvenient it is for us to do the updates. Oh sure, there is an auto update, but that's only for PAID subscribers. Who do they think they are, wanting money for this stuff? We free users had better start getting the respect we deserve, because everything else is free, so anti-Spyware should be.

Same with Spybot. If this guy has a day job, he'd better get his priorities straight.

Whilst I sympathise with Kevin the TD's views - and perhaps Lavasoft SHOULD provide an automatic update to its free version - part of the pleasure of using this site is to read and "be up to date" from posts made by regular contributors. I would miss the friendly chat and sharing of ideas - AND the thanks that one receives very often - that is missing from other forums if restrictions were put on what could be shared with users.

I hope that Computing.net will remain open to such views from users thousands of miles apart across the globe. As far as I am concerned tommyo's point re: courtesy carries a lot of weight.

Personally i don't understand what all the fuss is about, or why anyone could possibly be put out by the fact that Adaware is updated frequently. For the love of God, you don't have to download every single update that Adaware releases, unless you plan on scanning your machine every hour on the hour.

If you do a full system scan once a week, then you just download the most recent update from Adaware before you do it. If it just so happens that they've recently released one of their hourly updates, then great. The results will be that much more current.

I agree with Kevin on the postings... everyone who uses Adaware knows to update the software prior to scanning. I don't think we need to know the exact moment a new update is released.

If you know about Adaware, you know about spyware. Chances are, if you know about spyware you will have a good idea if and when you pick one up.

I do not run out and update Adaware or Spybot allt he time cause I am fairly certain I do not have spyware. I do not enable cookies (unless I know the site). I usually do not go to bad websites.

I do download updates and scan every now and then just to be safe, and to get rid of all the stupid, waste-of-space Windows "recent" lists.

I love Adaware and Spybot. I am grateful they are available for free use, they have saved me a lot of time and trouble, especially fixing freind's pc's. However, safe surfing is much more effective than any Adaware or Spybot updates.

I am not trying to berate Ad-Aware and I will always allow the updates to be posted. I enjoy hearing other people's views about things so I asked the question and I thank all of you for your replies.

That's the great thing about this forum, Kevin. You folks have done a great job of promoting opinions and ideas.

I got a big kick out of seeing what the original forum looked like back in 1996. Someone mentioned it in a post recently... maybe it was you... so i took a peek at it. What a hoot seeing the 'state of the art' Windows 95 being discussed so fervently.

On the issue of posting ever new Adaware update... i didn't mean to sound like i was poo-pooing it. Some folks here have put a lot of time into keeping us updated on this, and it's commendable. I just don't think the posts have a whole lot of value, since we're all going to check for updates anyway before doing a scan.

Keep up the great work, and thanks.

Jim

Hey Kevin, long time no see.

You're points are well written. IMHO, I am glad the makers of these fine products care enough to update them as much as they do. If I'm working on a comp I update first then let it do it's "thang." That's just proper procedure in my book and if there is an new update posted while I'm checking, chances are good the computer won't have anything related to the update that fast anyway.
