Comment: I've got a problem any text field i start to type in gets filled with x's (ie xxxxxxx..).I scanned with Norton and came up with nothing.I can't connect to the internet because it fills in my password field with xxxxxx so I can't do an online scan.I can't check msconfig to see if anything is starting on start up that shouldn't because the run box fills with x's before i can type in it.Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.The os is ME.

Reply: (edit) Update to the problem.I decided to reformat drive.Inserted my win 95 boot disk to format C:.When it came up to the A prompt the x's started filling in there also not allowing me to do any DOS commands.Any input would be apprecited.Really would like to find a fix for this.

Reply: (edit)get a known clean bootdisk, write protect it,
then with your pc off, put in your a: drive,
then bootup, see if it still is all xxxx's
if so it could be your keyboard, if not
then format with the write protected startup disk, you might have to fdisk if it is a boot sector virus.

try a restore before formatting it.
start-programs-accessories-system tools-system restore, choose a point when it was working properly, restore will auto restart your pc when it is done.

Reply: (edit)well i had a similar problem my text fields were typing out strange word. turned out it was the speach recognition program that was installed with xp. all i had to do was turn it off

Reply: (edit) This really has me baffled.I tried reformatting with a new write protected bootdisk.Deleting and creating a new partition first with fdisk.After a install of ME the problem came back.Is it possible for a virus to live through that?
I don't think that it is the keyboard because there was also some other strange behaviour (ie. when some windows opened the contents of the window would go up and down as if someone was moving the scroll bar.If I clicked on the bar it would stop but would start again after releasing the mouse).
