Tab popups and virus cleanup

Hello. My issues have been going on for about a week now, and I have been running antivirus scans almost daily since then. There are multiple problems here, so please bear with me.

It all started when I began getting unwanted popups and random google redirects. Usually they went to phony search engines or sites advertising fake antivirus software, and I tried closing out of them ASAP, but I still caught something. I suddenly started getting a crazy number of ads and "security notices" on my desktop advising me to buy some Total XP Security program. Fortunately, a scan with Malwarebytes either crippled or removed this malware. I wouldn't be surprised if there were bits of it still floating around on my system, but I don't know how to identify them or remove them. (If I could get some advice on this in addition to my main problem, that would be great!)

My main problem right now is that my original issue with general popups and redirects is still persisting. They occur on both IE and Firefox. Rather than opening in a new window, they open up in in new tabs in my browsers. And while the frequency of google redirects that I've been getting have decreased, they still happen occasionally. I've updated and scanned with Malwarebytes, AVG, McAfee, and they all come up clean. A friend advised me to try Hitman Pro 3.5, but it always crashes before the scan is complete.

I'm not really sure where to go from here. Any advice would be really helpful. The Total XP Security mess was a real pain, and I would hate to have to go through something like that again.

I too crossed this problem, at that time my PC was full of viruses. Later i reinstalled the operating system and installed AVAST. After that this problem was gone away. Hope this would be helpful.

Thank you for the reply!

It's occurred to me that I might be able to solve these issues by reinstalling my OS, but I thought I would save it as a last resort. At the very least, I'd like to at least know what viruses I caught and how to prevent myself from catching them again once my system is clean.

(Edit: I actually had to do a reinstallation some months back, during September or October, also because of viruses. Something I'm doing here is probably causing me to pick them up, unaware!)

So... the redirect issue is getting worse again. Downloaded and tried SUPERAntispyware, which removed a few trojans/cookies, but didn't fix the issue. I've also been updating and scanning with my other antivirus programs. It's been a few weeks now, and I'm getting nowhere battling this problem.

Is reinstalling my OS really the only option here?

EDIT: Don't get me wrong. It's not like I haven't seen the many threads on these boards about the google redirect virus. There doesn't seem to be one universal solution to these, however, and it's also been suggested that there are many different variations of malware causing these symptoms.

How does a person determine what the virus is, and where it is located? Is there a handy guide somewhere out there that one can use? (I wish!)
