System Restore; Virus Help?

Specs: Windows XP
Recently (day or two ago) my computer just randomly started opening these fake virus messages, and has an animation of scanning, and whenever you try to close it, it just says that theres a virus and has to be installed. it comes up with a box saying "open, save, cancel" like a normal download, which i will not do... so i turned my pc off and went to bed because boxes kept popping up saying to download ect. Now i come on today, seeing that the pop-up's have stopped, but whenever i try to click on a link in a serch website, it creates a new tab, directing me to about 5 different completly random websites which are not the actual link i click on.
So i try to system restore, which i thought the only way to deal with it, but whenever i try to do it, it just says "click on a bold date and will be restored back to then bla bla" but the only bold date is todays date, which obviously will not help me... i cant click on a previous date, month anything... Sorry if i'm doing something wrong, but i'm really worried about my pc, and getting fed up with it. So any help will be greatly apriciated.

As an FYI, viruses and malwares both are known to "home" into the System Volume Information (SVI) Folder. The SVI folder is where XP stores restore points. Once the bugs gets there all your system restore points are lost. It is customary to disable System Restore function in order to flush them out during virus removal process then reenable it again.
