I installed Norton Internet Security 2004 on my Laptop about an hour ago. After the installation was finished and I rebooted the system, it loaded up to showing my Desktop, but then the entire system froze when I tried clicking on the "Norton Internet Security" link. I rebootet again, and again it froze, this time when I tried rightclicking on the background. I've been trying to get it back to run properly, but it doesn't start, and when I try using the NIS CD as boot-CD, it doesn't help a bit.
I had W32@jeefo.a on my laptop a few days ago, found it with an online scanner (houseclean) and thought it was completely removed. Could my problems be related to a remaining infected file?
If not, what can I do to get my machine back and running??

When you were installing Norton 2004 it should have propmted you to do a pre-installation virus scan which would have detected any virus that would have messed up Noorton's installation. Was this scan done? Can you start your computer in the "safe mode"(tap or hold down the F8 key during startup)? If you can then see if Norton will work, and what other tasks you have running. Is your XP firewall turned off(control panel>network connections>properties>advanced)?

I did the pre-scan and it came up with nothing. (I managed to start that pre-scan from CD and it's running now again).
I can start in safe-mode, but I can neither run nor uninstall Norton.
I've managed to get only the Anti-Virus part to run from CD, it didn't find any virus on the machine. I don't know if that's still valid, but I remember someone telling me that if your system is already infected, the majority of anti-vir progs will have huge problems finding the infection source; still true?
I'm slowly getting to the point where I think trying to re-instate the system to the very first point might be the option, in opposition to formatting the entire harddrive (which is only slightly worse)...

I would do "system restore" to a restore point before you installed Norton. Then try a trial version of NOD32, and get Sygate for your firewall. I have had problems with Norton 2004. My 2000 machine's boot time was taking almost six minutes. I like the free Sygate better than NIS anyway.

If you are strapped for cash try this solution from http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm The firewall is a version of Zone Alarm pro and the antivirus rates decently at VIRUS BULLETIN in their 100%VBS scores. I have it on my children's and one of my systems.

It is true that Norton Internet Security
is problematic.
I uninstalled it two or three
times from friends' PCs (it was installed by the vendor)and installed Kerio firewall and AVG instead. Not a single problem after that...
(If someone has more experience he can choose another Antivirus,but...)

hello
the etrust capt gave link for i just instald it on my back up machine in place of avg and zap.2.6 it seams to be well worth installing. thx!!!!!!!!!!

An antivirus program is good
if you can USE it !!!That is why there is no answer
to the question "What is the best
antivirus program ?"A program can detect more viruses
than another but if it creates
problems like interfering with other
programs or slowdowns,freezes and such,
then it is not USABLE at least for
people that have little experience...

Thanks for all the advice and the help, I got my machine working after hours and hours of fiddling fingers and guess-work. The main problem seemed to be an infection that had not been detected before, I cleaned everything and it's running more or less smoothly now -- apart from the slow bootup that someone already mentionned. I have to say, NIS 2004 is not really too much to my liking...
