Name: Nick R (by Nick Ritchie)
Everytime I run live update is has a rather large update for the redirector. For some reason it will not install the 1.4M.B. download ? At symantecs website it says one of the fixes is to open the live update icon in my control panel ,well I looked and I dont have one ? Another suggested fix is to empty the symantecs download folder. Frist of all my PC is not on a network ,and Iam not exactly sure what the redirector is for and if its nessaary. The rest of my Norton Anti-Virus 2002 works well scanning incoming emails, and allowing updating the virus definitions. Should I bother trying to fix this or just leave well enough alone. Another fix is uninstalling all Norton products and reinstalling ,I have Norton Utilities also ,and would like to try and avoid uninstalling and reinstalling if possible !
thanks to all in advance
NICK

Check in add/remove programs for the version of liveupdate that you have. It should be 2.5. If it is not 2.5, go to the Symantec website and use the downloads area to get and install it. You can use add/remove programs to uninstall the previous version or let the new liveupdate do it automatically. This should resolve your problem.

Thank you for the suggestion ,it sounds like a good idea. I looked in the ADD/REMOVE programs and live update is listed .I have to get the kids ready for school and get off to work ! I copied your directions and will try them later ,let you know the outcome !
Thanks Again ,Nick

I already have ver2.5 of live update ,I tried the emptying out of the symantecs download folder ,still cant install redirector update. I would like to know is how important of a feature is this to protecting my PC from a virus, this is a single use desktop ,in other words its not on a network except when on the internet !

It is my understanding that redirector is what NAV uses as part of its on line updating system and determines the order of how updates are applied. I find Symantec's updating system and programs to be complex and confusing. A couple of years ago liveupdate version 1.6 was compromised. You had to manually upgrade to version 1.8, it was not done automatically if you had liveupdate set to interactive, which used to be the default setting. If you have liveupdate configure in the control panel to the interactive mode things like redirector will not be automatically updated, you must manually use liveupdate to get these updates. These updates do become important as Symantec changes its system to provide more security. What firewall do you have? In your initail post you said symantec liveupdate was not shown in the control panel. It should be as it is a separate program. You are given two options on how you want liveupdate to work, choose the express mode with the security boxes selected, this mode will automatically update things like redirector. You might have to try uninstalling and using rnav2000, Symantec's removal toll for NAV2003 and earlier. Before you reinstall make sure that you download and install liveupdate version 2.5 and that it is shown in the control panel. Here is what Symantec has about resolving the rediector problem

Here is a simple process that worked for me:
1. Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (WICU) from
Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2903012. Install and run it. (It puts an icon in the Start Menu)
3. In the WICU, highlight "Symantec Network Driver Update" and click
Remove button.4. Close Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and run Live Update.
Symantec Redirector installed successfully. I hope it works for you.
Good Luck.
Bob Leonard
