Hi! I hope someone knows how to help me with this.
about every 5 minutes I get a small black screen pop up. It doesn't stay. Just appears then disappears. I've determined this much. It's the command prompt window that's popping up. It does it every 5 min like clockwork. From scheduled tasks I went to Advanced then View log. It's Symantec causing this. How do I fix this?? I also tried to 'open' my Nortons System works from my taskbar, desktop and Programs. Neither of them would let me open it. :( Here's the log file:

I don't think that will fix mine. I don't have SP1 not 2, nor the XP Tablet. And error no is different.

Okay.. I'm not very knowledgable with comps. lol I typed my error # into the search engine and it brought up several posts. They all have to do with defragging.. and this isn't something that I did. ??? I don't even know how to do it. lol Maybe I did it by accident???

to defrag, go to start>all programs>system Tools>disk defragmenter.

I have a feeling you have alot of spy and adware on your PC, as windowsXP comes loaded with it.
If you want you could clean it out using
Spybot S&DMake sure to up-date it before using it.

I'm confused. ;) Do I need to defrag to make this box stop popping up?
On the Spyware... I've done nothing but clean that crap off here the past week. With SpyBot, with Ad aware, still had some stuff that would go so Ad-Aware support had me Hijack This and then told me what to remove. But for this they said since Symantec comes up in the error message they can't help me. :(

If NetDetect was not successful in connecting to a LiveUpdate server, it waits for five minutes and then attempts to connect to the server again. It repeats this every five minutes as long as the Internet connection remains open. This time can be adjusted in the Windows Task Scheduler.
A little info on mobsync.exe, may be related
to your problem.
Microsoft Mobile Synchronization Manager.
One annoying programme you will find running in W2K/XP is mobsync.exe.
This is because it is set by default to synchronise your home page at log-on.
To stop this, run the programme "Synchronise" from your "Start/Programmes/Accessories
Menu. Select setup, and uncheck the synchronisation options, then deselect the option to synchronise your home page. From explorer select Tools/Folder Options/Offline Files: deselect the "Enable Offline Files" option. When you reboot
you will find the programme is no longer running by default.
You can also remove optional components from your Windows 2000 installation that are not shown in the Add/Remove Programmes applet.Hope you fix it.

Thanks... I appreciate the help. ;) Unfortunately I've not accomplished anything yet because my Nortons won't open! Grrrr! Not from the taskbar, desktop or even from Programs.

I also went into the Scheduled Tasks folder. Clicked on Symantec NetDetect, properties, schedule and advanced. then changed the time to 10 min. Which it did change. But a couple minutes later it went back to 5 min on its own!! I did this twice to make sure and it was applied and changed but something made it go back to 5 min! Grrrrrrr......

go to control panel >administrative tools>>services scroll down to task scheduler double click it select disable click apply then hit the stop button.wait 5 mins see if it pops back up.

also check start>run>type msconfig go to the startup tab on the end see if anything funny is running,uncheck it reboot.
also check task manager right click botton bar select task manager go to processs again look for something funny.

omg... good question. I was finally able to access Nortons via the Norton Firewall then clicking on Antivirus tab. Although auto protect is on and I see an occasional notice that my virus definitions have been updated I decided to do an automatic live update. And it couldn't finish. Gave me an error message and said to contact support. So I checked my version (which is good til July) and which I thought was new. It isn't!! Its 2003. So no support is available. :( What should I do? I think this explains why Panda showed 67 infections a week ago. Nortons isn't updating its definitions?? Should I uninstall it and download something else? If so, What's a good free av and firewall? Thanks!! :)

You might also go online, do a search for Housecall, and run Trend Micro's free online virus scan. As you know, there are a number of free antivirus programs and firewalls. I have been using a program called AntiVir for a few months now, and have had no virus problems. Avast! is also pretty good. Also, I have been using Sygate as a free firewall, and it seems to work fine.

with 2003 you can uninstall it reinstall it and it will start over and give you a year of updates.i would uninstall everything nortons in add/remove an start over.
