Subject: svhost.dll and error messages at st
OS: windows ME 9.40.3000
CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron / 376 Mb
Model/Manufacturer: Acer 210
Comment:

PC gives a sequence of errors while starting: first like "explorer encountered error with SVHOST", then others applications like msgrv32 (many times) and mmtask. Once ended the error message sequence the PC runs normally or blocks or forbids you to see start menu.

In the C:\windows, svhost.dll appears (reappearing every normal boot even if you wipe it out). Only in safe mode it doesn't reapper. Arrival and Sent .dbx files contain the word svhost somewhere. A cooky containing the word svhost is in the cooky folder. Regedit doesn't show any svhost name anywhere.
I scanned in safe and normal modes, without restore option, and without any other application self starting (i.e.by Msconfig option) for Norton, Ad-Aware SE Personal, multi AV-CLS (Sophos and Kapersky work, Trend and Mcafee not) , SpybotSD, without any success.
There are no differences between hijack in safe mode and in normal mode.
Any one could help me? I can send the svhost.dll file for analysis What happens if I re-install windows ME?
Many thanks in advance

Post a Hijack This log please set it up as follows.

Download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

Found and removed (bad?)internet address in trusted zone (internet->option->protection, see O15 my hijack)

Panda's scan blocks explore any time I make scan run.

Done the ATF-cleaner

By the way what is O4 HKLM ... Restore/startmgr.exe in my hijack? Is it correct that startmgr has to be retieved from restore folder in windows ME? And regarding O9 Extrabutton (no name) ... ssv.dll, is it correct? Where can I check BHO numbers from O2?
thx

REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 98
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 98 exits.
REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following, this may take a few trys to get the timing right.

Restart your computer.

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the Safe Mode option, then press "Enter".

Once in safe mode navigate to and delete this file if found:

C:\WINDOWS\winsys.exe

Next restart the computer and it will boot up in normal mode.

Try to run the Panda online scan again and post the results please.

Once erased winsys.exe and svhost.dll the PC starts correctly without any more error messages and svhost.dll is not anymore regenerated.

Still explorer blocks for a while trying Pandascan on-line to run. Panda says that the first time I should have ActiveX (I have a folder with this name in Acrobat 6.0). Is it this the problem?

Norton is not anymore launched in background and if I try to launch it, the PC gives: NMAIN caused an error in ASCOMPBR.DLL. Should I uninstall and reinstall Norton?

In normal mode, when I try to launch "find (or search) file" explore blocks for a while and the utility doesn't work.

Other strange files modified on 12th gen (the day of infection) are:
windows\system\EID (I already isolated it)
WINIT.BAK
windows\applog\REGENV32.~~C
windows\applog\IKERNEL.LGD
windows\sysbckup\RB004.ZIP

(the same day I also uninstalled and reinstalled the ADSL software)

You would need to allow Active X to install on the computer. It normally would do that just prior to running the online scan but you have to give it permission by clicking "yes" when prompted.

But first go to the following link and see if that will repair your Norton antivirus Norton's Autofix

Neither Norton autofix nor panda scan on-line work (explorer blocks for a while when I try to launch panda scan ecc.).

Searching on the net by words "winsys.exe and svhost.dll" I found a post telling that Italy is under attach by a rootkit.dialcall, but with continuos changes. The one I found describes how winsys.exe is dropped on the computer and excludes many antiviruses. It tells about svhost.dll and their keys in the regs. It says also that there is a service called pe386 which refers to the location
c:\windows\system32:lzx32.sys
but this service involve ADS and NTFS, while ME doesn't support it, isn't it?
There is also another key I eliminated:
HKLM\software\5T29L1D34B

See if this rootkit remover will run on ME.

Download rustbfix.exe and save it to your desktop.

Double click on rustbfix.exe to run the tool.
If a Rustock.b-infection is found, you will shortly hereafter be asked to reboot the computer. The reboot will probably take quite a while, and perhaps 2 reboots will be needed. But this will happen automatically.
After the reboot 2 logfiles will open (%root%\avenger.txt & %root%\rustbfix\pelog.txt). If needed (still infected), post the content of these logfiles along with a new HijackThis log.

Examples Only

Note : If the infection is found, the tool will produce 2 logs: The specific rusbfix-log could look like this:

**** Rustock.b-fix -- By ejvindh ****
