For several days I've had an 'AVG E-mail Scanner' pop-up appearing near the task bar, sometimes every 5 minutes, displaying the following info:
AutoPOP3: Connecting to ppp-58.10.234.151revip2.asianet.co.th
(A variant of this was the slightly different destination of 58.10.233.106)
What is this?
It happens when my e-mail client (Opera) is closed, I have no e-mail accounts with Asianet, (my ISP is UK based) and there's no record of related e-mails received/sent in Opera. I also set up Opera to only send/receive manually, not periodically in the background.
My PC is always up-to-date with the latest Windows patches, I also run AVG, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware and CWShredder - all with the latest updates. None of these have found anything.
I also run Hijack This and my log file only displays the usual familiar components.
I do use fileshare (bit torrent) software and did consider this may be some sort of tracker/ratio tracking but the admin at one site said this was impossible.
Anyone got any ideas what this might be?

Try System Restore, I have had good results using this way or Safe Mode, different to Last Known Good Configuration in Safe Mode.

System Restore is accessed the following way:1. It's a good practice to shut down all other applications before using System Restore, as it requires a full-system reboot to complete the installation. Connecting to the internet is not required, however. So shut all applications. Then click "Start."
2. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then the program will load.
Here's a screen shot of the program-entry screen: http://www.techbuilder.org/recipes/60402485Or,
If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode.
Toggle F8 or Press Ctrl ( depends on your comp ) during bootup ( just before, verifying DMI pool, message comes on )
Select Safe Mode.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply, appreciate it.
Wish I'd tried that the other day, but I ended up switching off System Restore and so I lost all my restore points.
I'd read at the AVG forums about switching off S. R. and then cleaning a PC with antivirus/trojan/adware scanners (apparently S. R. can harbour infected files in a protected area, and immediately reinfect a computer).

Are you using some BitTorrent or Emule/EDonkey P2P???
See this:
Azureus does allow data exchange to occur on port 25 so you may be encountering a client connection that is requesting sharing over port 25. Since Azureus is a Java application any interaction that needs access outside the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), like a network pipe, will be attributed to the JVM executable encapsulating Azureus. A firewall is likely to interpret any port 25 activity as SMTP email activity, so port 25 activity stemming from Azureus has a strong chance of being viewed as email activity on the part of the JVM.
A simple way to keep these port 25 requests from occurring within Azureus is to go to Tools/Transfer. Then add port 25 to the "Ignore peers with these data ports" field. Make sure to save your changes and this will probably take care of this issue.
It is probably not a virus. I have the same problems when running E-Mule or Azureus and AVG.

Not sure if this is related, but after installing AVG 7.0.206, AVG e-mail scanner would pop up every 30 seconds in the taskbar saying it was scanning incomming or outgoing e-mail. My e-mail programs were closed. Tried all sorts of things with the firewalls and program cfgs to no avail. Finally found a post directing me to delete any files in the AVG7/Queue. No folders in the Queue Folder, just files. Mine were in C:/Doccuments and Settings/Owner/Application Data/AVG7/Queue/Temp. No more problems now.
