I am trying to gauge the best anti-virus software available.I would like to know which one out of the 5 listed below would you choose and why?
1. Panda Software
2. Norton
3. PC-Cillin
4. Protector Plus
5. Grisoft

none of them,,
eTrust EZ anti-virus from CAI
Decsendant of InoculateIT PE,
So far, I have seen NO complaints about the function of this program by users, and there are many.It very simply does the job it's meant for and doesn't screw up the system.

I would recomend McAfee 6.2. Ive been using since it came out, never had a problem running with ME. Also it detected yhe one virus ive incountered immediatly, giving me plenty of time to get rid of before caused any damage. Its just my personal opinion, I think McAfee has the best anti-virus software.

A prior post on the ME forum had a link to test results. I don't know the post or the link, but I do know that Panda came out on top. I use Norton, only because it was part of System Works, and I use Disk Doctor, WinDoctor and Speed Disk.
People like different brands for different reasons, but unless someone used several and found significant differences (like one found a virus and another did not) then you may want to take recommendations with a grain of salt. Norton is hard to install and even harder to uninstall and there are praises as well as boos for both Norton and McAfee.

My personal recommendation is McAfee VirusScan. When updated with current virus definition files I have never had any problems with it MISSING viruses. I had PC-Cillin (came with my laptop) and Norton, and both missed several files on my computer which I knew were infected with viruses. In case you're wondering, I am a computer consultant and get many calls on viruses and so I have a collection of files which I know are infected but have in their own HIDDEN directory so that they are no danger to my system, but I can use for testing and also can dissect myself to learn more of their makeup.
Anyways, McAfee is my recommendation. And with their acquisition of a nearby company to me (and one with very useful and powerful products), NeoWorx, I have more confidence that they will improve even more on their already huge success.
Did ya ever notice that ALL the virus scan software manufacturers release updated pattern/definition files on the same day or within a day of each other? Always thought that was entertaining...

I agree with Renaissance Man; You can hardly trust the reviews let alone opinion. I have read about 5 different articles from ZDNet, to PC Magazine and each one picked something different. I also use Norton because of system works. It is nice to have a program that takes care of the mundane, and if used correctly (key word correctly) few problems. It is a glutton for space and also is not perfect I have had two viruses in two years, and thats using a firewall too, so nothing is perfect. Grisoft AVG is pretty good for a freebie,

I had MacAfee - but had multiple problems with it. Have since, switched to AVG (the free version) and have not had a singel probelm since. MacAfee's firewall would frequently prevent my computer from talking to the cable modem, which required an uninstall not just shutting down, and the virus scan just sometimes starts acting weird (before or after the removal of the MacAfee firewall). My favorite was the very reproducible crash every time it tried to scan a certain CAB file (also fixed by reinstalling), or just having all kinds of problems during start-up all of a sudden-like...
So, to this date, I would recommend AVG + a good firewall (I like ZA)...

I just bought a soltk mobo and it came with pc-cillin. It is great, has easy updates, lots of security features as blocking cookies and somewhat. The best one I have tried out but when it came to do the windows update I was unable to connect. Even with the antivirus disabled it could not connect with windows update and I tried everything. I uninstalled it and now it works fine. Using Norton 2002. satisfied but lacking lots of features.

norton antivirus is best for me, tried others
and they don't compare to nav.
but thats my opinion, mcafee was a memory hog last time I tried it, and wouldn't clean the junkie virus or the stoned monkey virus either, I ended up using nav and within a few minutes the problem was solved.after trying
some others,I went back to nav,which I
have been using nav since dos 5.0

Have used Norton, McAfee and AVG. McAfee and Norton were too intrusive on my system (Windows ME), frequently causing minor troubles. At least troubles ceased when they were uninstalled. AVG works smoothly, is easy to set up and configure and of cours free. The early criticism of infrequent updates no longer applies. They seem to automatically update my system daily. I vote AVG,plus also Zone Alarm!.

Norton is indeed a system hog.If you have a speedy computer you will not even notice.Go with Norton.I like 2001 better.

depends on needs, home use any of them are fine (although I am not a fan of mcafee). for lan/business use there are only two that are worht anyhting, trend micr office scan and Norton Corp. AV.

Hi there, I've used NAV 4.0 on Windows 95b with a ZoneAlarm firewall. The NAV 4.0 (older) way better than newer version. Also the NAV have a liveupdate for download the virus defs database it's free subcriptions to liveupdate forever in the NAV 4.0!

hay guys tell u the truth the avp r kind ok the best is mcaffe i know i write my own trojans i can get passed any avp its to easy so dont think ur safe ppl use binders and packers norton is a joke i can make a s7 server undtected by norton and many othere but get macaffe its better hay dont get hacked ps theres a new trojan when u open ur email it will install on ur computer u know how its imbeded in a .html the ie 6.0 has yet many more exploits lmao have fun guys and gals

Hi,
I guess if you have a computer & are running cable or dsl, you should have as protection the very best. Nod 32 Anti-Virus, BO Clean Anti-Trojan, PestPatrol Anti-Spyware, and a great Free firewall such as Kerio plus a Router of your Choice.
Old Murve de Curve.

The best anti virus is caution.
Don't give your email addy to people you don't know.
Don't open emails from people you don't know - especially if the subject wording is weird.
Never open *.exe, *.vbs, or *.js file type attachments! No matter what the heading is, mypics090299jpg.zip.exe is going to try to execute! Always email back to find out what it is before you open an attachment unless it's from a trusted source.
Check antivirus web sites every so often and see what's out there (top ten in the wild, most prevelant, etc).
While it can make diagnostics a pain, installing your system files in a different folder (ie. mysystemfiles instead of WINNT or SYSTEM32) can prevent many viruses.
Keep away from sites that aren't morally binding. Though not as common as email attachments, porn sites, hack sites, etc are known for embedding nasties in their pages.
Take full advantage of software updates!
Also don't forward emails ranting about the latest horrible virus without checking one of these sites first. Most emailed virus cautions are hoaxes, and one I received actually had a virus!! I use Norton personally, but I've used McAfee, Panda, and Trend. At work, we (now) use GriSoft and a few mini removers. My home PC was infected once with the pretty park virus - found by Norton on the first scan, but missed by an old version of Panda. At work we got nimbda which crippled our system for a few hours.

I think all you guys are just guessing.
I once had a satellite feed that delivered ALL the newsgroups and attachement to my hard drives daily - from Planet Connect. I ran 6 virus scanners and found at least 30 different kinds of viruses in the attachemnts during a couple months. I put them all in one directory and tested all the virus scanners to see which ones found the most. McAfee is next to USELESS when it comes to keeping up with CURRENT viruses. It found only 3. I strongly advise you to dump McAfee - it only gives you a false sense of security.
Norton was actually the best and Anti-viral Toolkit Pro was just about as good. Between the two of them they identified all the viruses. Currently I'm also using the Panda online scanner and it's getting about the same results as Norton. I'm not a big fan of Norton but I can say that Norton did start detecting a new virus that I found and reported, within a couple days. And a few weeks ago they falsy identified batch files with a "for-in-do" loop as infected. They corrected this the next day after I reported it. I seriously doubt I was the only one doing the reporting and they never said thank you or kiss my a** but they were on top of things. McAfee does NOTHING but sit back and copy Norton's definitions WEEKS after Norton puts them out. By that time you are screwed. Can I get an Amen ?

Ugh...I'm going crazy because I have Win. ME and I tried Norton & it totally screwed my comp. up...& then I decided to try McAfee since it came with my comp. as a free thing and it worked pretty well...For a while. Then I got a few more products and now it is insisting I don't have some of then s I have to update it seprately which is rather inconvient. I'm trying to decide what to switch to..I've tried a few freebies but they all were rathre usless and one of my family members dwnloaded a virus since they are not too comp. literate soooo...McAfee has done nothing to help. (aka useless)
