Subject: Stubborn Look2Me
OS: Windows XP SP2
CPU/Ram: 512MB
Model/Manufacturer: Intel
Comment:

i've been infected with Look2Me recently. at the time of "infection", i only have windows XP SP1, although, i've recently installed SP2 (it's never too late). Also, i can't seem to activate Windows XP Firewall But i will be installing sygate firewall asap.

i will be very grateful to any good samaritan who is willing to help me because i've tried all the fixes available online (despite the futility):
Look2Me Remover - causes my pc to reboot unexpectedly
L2M fix - error message pop up saying that cmd.exe is not compatible with the current system
Look2Me Destroyer - says that it had remove signs of look2me, but problem recurs upon reboot
Don't Look2Me - says that no sign of l2m is found, after several reboots
Ad-aware - cannot remove dll's completely
Ewido Guard - cannot remove dll's completely
Spybot Search & Destroy - cannot remove dll's completely
Vundofix - not working
SpySweeper - problem recurs after reboot

First turn of Norton's script blocking if you have it and temporarily disable "real time protection" for any of the tools that you may have at this link or "the look2me fixes will not work."

Disable Realtime Protection

Then run look2me-destroyer again.

If that don't work uninstall sp2, then remove it it and reinstall sp2.

I'd prefer that you run ad-aware in safe mode, but with the vx2cleaner plugin.

You'll have to restart in order to get in safe mode. Symantec has some info on how to enter safe mode:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=3#_Section3

Ok here's what you do:
1) Download vx2cleaner (ad-aware plugin):
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml
here are some brief instructions on how to use it:
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/eco/vx2instructions.shtml
Don't scan anything yet, just install it.

2) Download and install CCleaner from www.ccleaner.com and install it. Run it, click "Analyze" and then "Run cleaner".

3) Use the vx2 cleaner plugin from ad-aware now, and then start a full system scan with ad-aware (still in normal mode). Restart your Windows in safe mode, then run ccleaner, vx2 cleaner, and ad-aware full system scan again (in that order).

4) Post a hijackthis log after all the steps are completed :)

This is just to ensure that most of the bad files are removed.

Hello Savo, I'm with you in that adaware se is one of the only vx2 cleaners that will work in safe mode. In that it may be an older version your proposal could work, anyway worth a try.

Have to sign out for the night thanks for the insight.

1) successful
2) removed stuff
3) when i click "run tool", then scan, vx2 cleaner said that system is clear, but when i did a full system scan, adaware found vx2 and supposedly was able to remove it.
IN SAFE MODE: same thing happened with vx2cleaner, although, this time adaware found cmdService

before i did the steps above, i noticed that several instances of SVSHOST.EXE (different owners) are running. it also attempts to connect to suspicious sites when i'm online.

After doing the steps above, same behavior was observed. as of this writing, there are 7 instances of SVCHOST.EXE: 4 owned by SYSTEM, 2 by NETWORK SERVICE and 1 by LOCAL NETWORK.

below is my latest HJT log:

You log looks pretty good. Run HT again, close all windows and browsers except HT, place a check to the left of the following items and press "fix checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

SVSHOST.EXE is a virus. SVCHOST.EXE in most cases is a legit file.

Run this free online scan from Panda

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to the desktop, then copy/paste into the text editor and post it.

Go to http://kaspersky.com/kos/english/kavwebscan.html
Click Accept
When the updates are finished downloading, click Next, Scan Settings
Under Scan using the following antivirus database:, select extended
Make sure the Scan Archives and Scan Mail Bases options are selected as well. Click OK
Click My Computer and wait for the scan to finish
Click Save Report As. Under Save as type:, select Text file. Save this log to your Desktop and post a copy of it here.
