Subject: Strange happenings with cpuOS: xpsp2CPU/Ram: AMD 4, 512 |
Comment: This is real strange, my computer kept cutting off about 3 min after turning on, after about 5 times, it finally would not boot, thank goodness I had a Image just made yesterday by PQ and restored it in 10 min, it booted up fine, but still want to know what might have happened because it may happen again, soon. I have no spyware, virus everything is up to date and scanned and is clean right before I made my Image yesterday, I did uninstall Sygate firewall and installed Zone Alarm (not by choice I love Sygate) but don't care for Norton and heard they bought them so figured it would change...This is what I have noticed.... When I hit the Ctrl-Alt-Del to see what is running immediately I see 100% CPU, I know Zone Alarm uses more than Sygate but that is awful, but when I leave the Windows Task Manager open for about 25 seconds it goes down to normal around 10 to 13%, this happens every time I check it, it is 100% CPU usage then drops back to normal....Any thoughts on this? Please let me know, I don't know if it is Zone Alarm or What, I really wish Sygate would have stayed Sygate.

Reply: (edit)you could open zone alarm click overview, preferences tab, under general uncheck load zone alarm at startup, then reinstall sygate free version. and see if that clears up the problem. I've done this to get around a few of the bugs that are part of za version 6. and after za comes out with a fix I can enable za and then uninstall sygate and apply the update. sygate free version is available at http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160

Reply: (edit)The only reason I don't reinstall Sygate is because Norton is buying them out so shortly they will either destroy Sygate's great firewall or charge a arm and leg, I am sure soon it will be not free and will become bloated. Kerio I have not tried but will check it out. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Uninstalled Zone Alarm (What a piece of crap), reinstalled Sygate been on Computer all day and so far have not had any of the problems that I had before at all..The free Zone Alarm must be different than the Pro, because I can't imagine paying for Zone Alarm and having these problems.

Reply: (edit)they're very similar (za and za pro). the older version wasn't as buggy. the current free kerio is the same as the old free tiny firewall, I've read anyway. and the free sygate is still the same as before. most people think symantec will start charging for it, once it's renamed. but the current one will still work. they are discussed a bit at securitynow NAT Routers as Firewalls sept/1st.
