Strange files reappearing

I recently removed more than 77,000 2 byte files from my root directory, only to find tonight, that they have reappeared. They are numbered incrementally from 0 - over 77,000 and have no file extension. They appear to be doing no damage other than making access to the C: drive extremely slow. AVG comes up clean, as does Trendmicro. I've also run Tauscan to scan specifically for trojans, but it also came up clean. Any ideas out there?
what are the file names? Google them and if it's an infection, then a cleaning procedure should show up

They have no names, just sequential numbers with no extension. It's really weird.

Just a quick follow-up. I ran the online scan at pandasoftware, and still came up clean. Looks like software may be the culprit, although you must admit that by it's nature, this problem would seem virus-related.

0œY„ or 0|Y| shows up on C: drive with no extension. In properties, it is 0 bytes and the MSdos filename is 0_Y_~1
